A Canadian Cross-Conference Clash
For this one, we’re going to take a look at the fixture involving two Canadian sides from each conference, as part of the newly-structured MLS season. CF Montreal are currently undefeated in the league after three games, and will travel to Utah to play Vancouver Whitecaps in their new home venue for the season.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC
Vancouver have had an OK start to the season, with one win, one draw and one loss in their first three fixtures. A 1-0 win in their opening game at home to Portland Timbers was a positive start to the 2021 campaign, and an away draw against fellow Canadian side Toronto FC was also a good result for the Whitecaps. However, in their recent game, a 1-0 loss at home to Colorado Rapids halted their positive start. As we’ve already mentioned, they have started the league playing their games in Utah at the Rio Tinto Stadium - home to Real Salt Lake. It may take time to adjust for Vancouver, and Montreal may be looking to take advantage at the weekend.
CF Montreal
In an impressive performance in the first league game of the season, Montreal put four past Toronto FC in a 4-2 victory. Striker Mason Toye has made a strong start to the season, scoring two in the first two games - one of the four in the opening weekend, and the other in a 2-2 draw away from home at Nashville. Then, most recently, Montreal hosted the 2020 MLS champions, and held Columbus Crew to a 0-0 draw - which is definitely considered a good result for the Canadian side. Now still undefeated, Montreal will look to extend it to four games unbeaten at the weekend.
Head to Head
There’s a common theme when looking at the past head to head results between the two sides: Goals. Lots of them. There’s been at least two goals in the previous five encounters, and going by this season’s results of both teams, there’s likely to be a few more at the weekend. In September of last year - the most recent fixture of Vancouver vs. Montreal - it was the home side that came away victorious, winning 3-1. Montreal will no doubt be looking for revenge, and whilst in a good run of form, will look to capitalize on that.
