In an Eastern Conference encounter, Toronto will host an in-form New York City side, but also have some form of momentum heading into the weekend’s game. The home side in this upcoming fixture are unbeaten in five, while NYC have won three on the bounce. With the midweek games still to be played, this could change. The question is, who will win this weekend?

Admittedly, it has been a very average MLS campaign for Toronto FC so far, and are slowly losing touching distance with the playoff teams. As it stands, Toronto are  eight points from a playoff spot, which is arguably a surprise, given some of their recent results. A 3-2 win on the road against a dominant New England Revolution team, as well as a 1-1 stalemate with high-flying Orlando City are both examples that Toronto can hold their own against good opposition. However, the rest of the season has seen them slip up against other teams, and now find themselves behind the rest of the teams in the east.

In contrast to the home side, New York City FC have made an impressive start to the season. Now at the halfway stage of the 2021 MLS regular season, the away side will definitely want to continue their good run of form. As the Eastern Conference stands, NYC FC have a game in hand, and have the chance to land in second if they were to gain all three points in that match. Recent results have also been a huge positive for New York City, with a 4-1 victory against 2020 MLS Cup winners Columbus Crew, as well as an outstanding 5-0 win against division rivals Orlando City.

Despite what we have just discussed, the previous head to head results between the two teams are fairly even. In their last five encounters, both teams have beaten the other on two occasions, while the most recent result - that took place earlier this season - ended as a draw. This may be a surprise to many considering the two teams' different starts to the season, and could play a part in either team’s confidence. For Toronto, they will want to build confidence from the result earlier this season, whilst NYC will be looking to get an extremely important win for them at the top of the conference.
