The climax of the NFL season is here; Kansas City meet Tampa Bay at Super Bowl 55! Both teams are in great form and have already been part of a nail-biting encounter this season, which saw Chiefs come out on top (27-24), despite a tense second-half comeback from Tampa. Read on as we highlight the potential MVPs of Super Bowl 55 and where we believe the Lombardi trophy is heading.
It is far too easy to look at the battle between the quarterbacks, Mahomes & Brady, in this match-up. Both QBs have been in the Super Bowl spotlight before, Mahomes looking to make it back-to-back Super Bowl wins and Brady looking to add his 8th piece of bling to his impressive cabinet.
However, we need to look beyond the QBs and take a closer look at Tampa’s backfield. In particular, the addition of previous fourth-round pick, Leonard Fournette. The running back has picked up an impressive 313 yards postseason, three touchdowns and adds versatility to the Tampa offense, allowing them to grind it out in the trenches, as well as utilising the aerial ability of Godwin, Gronk & Evans. The Chiefs defense will try to minimise yardage by playing their usual aggressive football, blitzing often and pressing hard. Keep an eye on Matthieu (3rd most interceptions this year), Clark & Breeland and expect some huge plays on both sides of the ball!
Kansas is home to an impressive offensive unit too. Physical tight end, Travis Kelce, has picked up 1416 yards and 11 touchdowns during the regular season, the most single-season yards by a tight end in NFL history. Alongside him, Tyreek Hill, who has 15 touchdowns and lightning speed that could easily add an extra, 5, 10 or 20 yards to each play. The Bucs defense seems more than prepared for this contest though, allowing the 6th fewest overall yards per game (327.6) and the least rushing yards (80.6) across the whole of the NFL.
We expect a high tempo match, full of passion, big hits and an even bigger scoreline from the top two ranked passing offenses. However, as the old adage goes, "defense wins championships”.
Tampa's impressive defensive stats will strike fear into any offensive coordinator, especially if your line is currently full of injuries, and missing starters, like the Chiefs. The Buc’s effectiveness at shutting down the run-game will take away half the Chiefs playbook and will force Mahomes & Co to take to the air - expect some exciting aerial battles, brave calls and maybe a few picks.
We have to side with the underdogs on this one and suggest keeping it simple with a bet on the Buccaneers to win, at odds of 2.38.
Our pick: Tampa Bay to win @ 2.38 with 888sport
