Philadelphia Eagles travel to face New York Giants this Sunday, with the visitors looking to tighten their grip on first place in the NFC East. The Giants are also looking for revenge after losing 21-22 to the Eagles in week seven of the season. The NFC East is such a strange beast this year that if the Giants win they have a chance of the play-offs, even though their record currently stands at 2-7. History is against the Giants, though, as they have lost to the Eagles on seven straight occasions now.
This isn’t Washington
Prior to beating Washington last weekend, the Giants had lost three of their previous four games by three points or less, a sign that they are perhaps not as bad as their record this season suggests. They scored just three points in the second half of the game with Washington, but managed to force five turnovers in the game. Both of the Giants’ victories this season have come against Washington, something that does not bode well for Sunday. Most bookies have the Giants as firm underdogs for Sunday’s game.
The Eagles do not have a great record this season themselves, but their 3-4-1 record has still been enough to see them lead the NFC East. They head into this game coming off a bye last weekend, but in their last outing they beat the Dallas Cowboys 23-9. A second successive victory would see them begin to look like dead certs to top the division and head into the play-offs.
Philadelphia will be relying on the strength of their defense to take them to victory. The Eagles defense is ranked number 4 in the NRL by Football Outsiders against the run and number 5 in rushing the passer. Players like Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat will be looking to turn in big performances on Sunday. The Giants are improving all the time on offense, and their offensive line coach Marc Colombo believes that his players have made “huge leaps” this week – something that will cheer up the team’s fans.
Our Pick: Eagles to win by 7-12
The NFC East is a strange division this season, and no team in it seems really able to get a proper grip on their season. The Giants only seem to know how to beat one team – Washington – and the Eagles do not have the greatest record this season either. We expect them to win on Sunday, though, despite being away from home, with our pick being that the visitors will triumph by seven to 12 points. 888Sport have odds of +430 for that outcome, which also looks pretty tempting to us.
