Tigers Should Rid Themselves of Javier Báez

Javy Báez is hitting of late. That’s news, considering the dreadful performance the shortstop has exhibited in his year-plus as a Detroit Tiger.

The trade deadline is looming, and Detroit is five games out of first place and 30-40. After a surprising first six weeks or so of the season, the Tigers are finding their level. That level is near the basement of a mediocre American League Central.

If any team will take Báez as a second-half add-on at the trade deadline, the Tigers front office should jump at the chance. Báez is a unique blend of talent, flair, and passion. His histrionics, his “flash,” make him one of the most exciting and recognizable players in baseball.

Is Baez really worth his weight in gold?

But Báez is most definitely not worth the money the Tigers owe him. Manager A.J. Hinch uses him in the No. 3 spot in the lineup, the batting order position traditionally reserved for the best hitter on the roster. Oh, how Al Kaline must be spinning in his grave.

If the Tigers can lure a team into taking Javy’s big contract off their books at the trade deadline, they should. Things are not going to be better for the franchise in 2023 or probably 2024 either.

Javy Báez Rise to Fame in the MLB

Báez, commonly known as "El Mago," has made a significant impact in MLB since debuting with the Chicago Cubs in 2014. Born on December 1, 1992, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Báez's journey to the big leagues is an inspiring tale of determination and immense talent.

Báez's baseball career began to take shape during his high school years at Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Florida. As a young shortstop, the Puerto Rican showcased exceptional skills on both offense and defense, catching the attention of scouts and earning him a reputation as a top prospect. His remarkable abilities with the bat, including impressive power and bat speed, made him a coveted player in the 2011 MLB draft.

Selected as the ninth overall pick by the Cubs, Báez quickly climbed through the minor league ranks, displaying his electrifying style of play. He consistently showcased his defensive prowess and exceptional arm strength, making jaw-dropping plays that earned him comparisons to legendary infielders. Fans and analysts couldn't help but marvel at his flashy glove work and quick reflexes.

Loved by Cubs fans - for good reasons

Báez made his MLB debut with the Cubs on August 5, 2014. From the moment he stepped onto the field, he captivated audiences with his dynamic playstyle. Known for his aggressive baserunning and daring slides, Báez became a fan favorite in Chicago. His ability to steal bases with astonishing speed and his knack for scoring in clutch situations made him an invaluable asset to his team.

Throughout his career, Báez has been recognized for his exceptional defensive skills, earning a Gold Glove Award in 2020 for his excellence at shortstop. Prior to coming to Detroit, Báez consistently ranked among the league leaders in defensive metrics, displaying incredible range and an uncanny ability to turn double plays.

Báez's offensive contributions have also been notable. He possesses raw power, often launching towering home runs that leave fans in awe. His aggressive approach at the plate and ability to drive in runs have made him a reliable run producer.

He played a pivotal role in the World Series championship run for the Cubs in 2016, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure on the grandest stage. His clutch hits and exceptional defense during that memorable postseason endeared him to Cubs fans forever.
