Let us waste no time in confirming that sports betting is legal in Vermont. The very first Vermont sportsbooks launched on January 11th, 2024, expanding on a market that was previously devoted solely to daily fantasy sports contests. Now, you’ll find that you can deposit, bet, and withdraw freely at three impressive online sports betting platforms, including the established DraftKings and Fanduel Sportsbook.

Sports betting is legal in Vermont for those who are physically located in the state and aged 21 and over. Those of you who are familiar with daily fantasy sports will find that the gambling age in Vermont has been unified to create less confusion and ensure that an online sportsbook's full offering is available to all users.

Markets, bonuses, and additional features will vary from sportsbook to sportsbook. However, you will find that Bill H127 has ensured that all national, regional, and certain collegiate-level sports will be covered in some capacity.

Pros & Cons
  • Officially launched on January 11th, 2024
  • Legal sportsbooks are externally audited
  • Available to all aged 21+
  • Great market coverage
  • A maximum of 6 sportsbooks will be available

Bill H127: A closer look at the Vermont sports gambling bill

After four failed attempts, we can now say that online sports gambling is legal in Vermont. This process has been in the works for over four years, with the first failed bill put forward back in 2019. By 2023, we had seen two additional bills rejected in an attempt to create a sports betting scene that would prove beneficial to the state and players alike. However, it wasn’t until an amendment to HB 313 was passed – a bill focused on the alcohol laws in Vermont – that things really started moving.

HB 313 also required the state to complete a full analysis of the sports betting scene. By October of the same year, full research had been completed, leading to Bill H127. This bill was then put forward in May and signed into law by June. Fast forward a few short months, and we now have the first three Vermont sports betting promos ready and waiting to be unleashed.

Licensing and taxation

All legitimate online sportsbooks opening their virtual doors in Vermont will be required to pass a vetting process. This process will review the online sports betting platform as a whole, focusing on safety, security, and fairness. Once all checks have been successfully completed, a maximum of six online sportsbooks can obtain a license from the Department of Liquor and Lottery. At the current time, three online sportsbooks have successfully received the accolade, including DraftKings and Fanduel.

From a player’s perspective, it is important to note that any winnings from lotteries or sports betting will be considered as a taxable income. When looking at the funds generated by legalizing sports betting in Vermont, we can see that $2-3 million has already been predicted to help aid the state’s problem gambling fund. Over the next few years, this figure will be expected to increase to $10-$15 million.

Verification checks

A surge in offshore betting is one of the main reasons that led to Vermont's legalization of sports betting. As most states surrounding Vermont allowed for sports betting to take place legally, players soon found that certain areas of Vermont could bypass geo-restrictions while others would make use of VPNs. Most of these sites are considered legitimate operators; however, it is worth bearing in mind that illegally joining and betting at an online platform will leave you with zero protection.

For those looking to join a legal online sportsbook in Vermont, strict verification checks must be met. To begin, you’ll soon be redirected if you attempt to visit from outside state lines. Once you are online, you’ll be expected to provide some basic personal details, including confirmation that you are over the age of 21. From here, you’ll then need to verify your account by linking your email address or telephone number. Finally, you’ll be expected to confirm your identity by forwarding your photo ID and a copy of a household bill.

Retail and mobile betting

Currently, retail betting is strictly prohibited across the state. There are no brick-and-mortar establishments to note, so we can’t see an amendment to this law coming any time soon. Mobile betting, on the other hand, is very much alive and legal across Vermont.

Although we have only seen three online sportsbooks officially launch, you will already have the opportunity to bet online through your mobile browser or via a dedicated mobile app.

Market coverage and betting bonuses

Bill H127 also discusses the range of available markets and leagues that will be covered. As anticipated, you’ll be free to bet on all major sports, leagues, and competitions, including the NFL, NHL, and MLB. Depending on your chosen online sportsbook, you’ll also find that you can bet on a selection of esports games, regional tournaments, and college matches. However, it is worth noting that college teams can only be bet on when they are involved in a tournament.

There are no major restrictions surrounding online bonuses. Instead, you’ll find many of the great promotions found across the US are available in the Green Mountain State. Based on the official launch, most online sportsbooks have looked to utilize a simple bonus bet to help get you started. However, along the way, we would anticipate seeing more deposit match bonuses, no deposit promos, and a number of first bet offers. Sites like DraftKings and Fanduel also have impressive rewards programs that allow you to pick up additional perks based on your usual activity.

Next, let us expand on the above and take a closer look at some of the very best legal online sportsbooks that have gone live in Vermont.
