A timeline of sports betting in Vermont
It hasn’t always been so easy to get your hands on
Vermont sports betting promos. As a matter of fact, there have been four failed attempts at legalizing online sportsbooks and sports betting apps in Vermont, starting all the way back in 2019.
Back then, Bill H484 was introduced. This bill was focused on legalizing both retail and online sports betting. However, with just one look, it was dismissed. Then, in 2020, two additional sports betting bills were put forward.
The first was Bill S213. This bill excused retail betting and focused solely on mobile betting in Vermont. It also suggested scrapping the $5,000 annual fee attached to daily fantasy sports sites and opting to tax both DFS and sports betting platforms 10% instead. As with Bill H484, Bill S213 was soon shunned. A third bill – S59 – was then introduced in March. This was passed through the Senate to the House but failed to go any further.
Nearly a year later, SB 77 was put forward. This bill proposed that sports betting could be legalized under the Department of Liquor and Lottery and would allow for six online sportsbooks to launch. The Bill was viewed but was soon stopped in its tracks.
By June of the same year, Vermont passed HB 313. This act made amendments to the laws surrounding alcohol in Vermont and also required a sports betting study to take place. This study was then completed in October.
It took until February 2023 for any updates to come. Bill H127 had now been proposed, suggesting that between 2 and 6 online sportsbooks in Vermont would be eligible to open. The bill also unified the
gambling age in Vermont, requiring DFS players and sports bettors to be at least 21 years of age. The Bill was passed to the Senate in May and was signed into law by Senate Gov. Phill Scott, in June.
On January 11th, 2024, the very first online sports betting sites in Vermont launched. DraftKings, Fanduel, and Fanatics lead the way; however, a total of six have the potential to go live throughout the year.
Reasons for the change in legislation
There are a number of reasons why online sports betting in Vermont was legalized. To begin, it provides a great opportunity for the state to provide residents with a source of entertainment while also managing to create funds that can be put to good use. It is already predicted that the first year of sports betting in Vermont will generate between $2-3 million that will be put towards the state’s problem gambling fund. Over time, this could increase to between $10-$15 million per year.
Additionally, it isn’t like Vermont sports fans aren’t already betting on sports – it just so happens that it has been at offshore sites or at sites legalized in other states without any consumer protection. With this in mind, it makes perfect sense as to why the state would legalize sports betting in Vermont, creating a safe, secure, and audited way for bettors to wager online.
