Welcome to our review of New Hampshire online gambling. We know how tedious it can be to stay abreast of all the changes which is why we have done all of the leg work for you.
Our review covers everything from the history of gambling in New Hampshire to where the law currently stands today with regards to sports betting, casino gaming and more. So, check out the rest of our review to know where you stand with New Hampshire online gambling right now.
There is not a whole lot of history about gambling in New Hampshire prior to the 20th century. This is because there was a blanket sentiment that stated that all gambling activities were outlawed in the state. The New Hampshire gambling laws were not very forgiving at all back then.
However, much like many other states, New Hampshire began to legalize some forms of gambling during the 1930s in response to the great depression. It was thought that introducing gambling into the market could help to alleviate some of the financial strain being felt by the state and its people. So, what could you gamble on at the time? Only pari-mutuel horse racing. This was the only form of gambling allowed in New Hampshire for a long time and it did help the financial situation in the state over time.
From then on, the only other forms of gambling that were introduced in the state were charity bingo games and lotteries/sweepstakes. You could also do some greyhound racing betting further down the line as well. Apart from that, all things were quiet on the gambling front in New Hampshire until 2014 when several bills were proposed to allow brick and mortar casinos to operate and to classify poker as a game of skill. These were shut down fairly quickly.
It was not really until 2019 that any traction for online gambling was picked up. Sports betting became regulated. However, unlike many other states who have several operators’ sites available. New Hampshire will only allow DraftKings to be available for sports betting as they have signed a six-year deal with the state. Players can now use the DraftKings platform in New Hampshire for their online sports betting needs. There may not be diversity but at least there is some opportunity to bet on your favorite teams.
Now we have a decent idea about the history of gambling in New Hampshire as a whole, but we have also already touched on what it took for sports betting to become legalized as well. Funnily enough, there was not a lot of buzz surrounding the legalization of sports betting in NH. In fact, there had been no proposed bills in the past until 2019.
It was in a legislative session where Governor Chris Sununu proposed that that revenue for sports betting be included in the upcoming budget for that year. It was not initially greeted with overwhelming success, but it also didn’t take much for the bill to pass either. The initial reservations were due to the fact that online casinos and sports betting came hand in hand. Once they pushed sports betting through as a separate entity, it picked up traction a lot faster and was ultimately passed.
The final piece of the puzzle was almost certainly down to the deal that the New Hampshire government struck with DraftKings. Instead of having multiple sites that would contribute to the revenue in the state in smaller amounts, New Hampshire signed a 6-year deal with the DFS giant DraftKings. The real kicker in the deal was that DraftKings would pay exactly 50% of their revenue to New Hampshire. That is a hefty split when you compare those rates to other states. That's what you pay for exclusivity, we suppose. It didn’t take long for things to get started and by the start of 2020 the first mobile sports betting site for DraftKings was launched in New Hampshire.
Unfortunately, there is not all that much to write in this section as casino gaming has hardly had a look in in New Hampshire. You may ask yourself is online gambling legal in NH for casino gaming? As we mentioned earlier, a bill was proposed in 2014 to at least allow for brick and mortar casino establishments to be allowed to operate, with the inclusion of poker as well. However, it was quickly shut down.
Since then, the only other sniff that casino gaming has even had was when it nearly piggybacked into legalization on the back of sports betting. However, in order for one to survive the other had to be put down and that was casino gaming. Sports betting went on to be legalized but casino gaming is still apparently looked at with real disdain by the New Hampshire state government.
So, for now anyway, online casino gaming is not an available option in the state of New Hampshire. Take a look at our review for online gambling New Jersey to see how they managed to have online casino gaming legalized so quickly.
Much like casino gaming, poker has only had one crack at the legislation sessions in New Hampshire. And just like its counterpart, it too fell short, gaining next to no support for its legalization even as a game of skill.
From what we can gather, there is nothing in the works at present that would suggest that online poker will become legal in New Hampshire any time soon. This may change in the near future, and you can check up on any developments right here at CaptainGambling to see if you can play cards online.
Here are some of the more prominent online poker sites in the US right now that will hopefully be available in New Hampshire in the near future as well. You can also take a look at some of the best Pennsylvania online gambling sites that offer poker as well if you like.
If there is one thing that sports betting fans can give credit to for their ability to bet on their favorite teams it is actually daily fantasy sports. It was the initial introduction of daily fantasy sports that we suspect got the ball rolling for sports betting to be legalized.
Either way, it was in 2017 that the same man, Governor Chris Sununu proposed that DFS betting be allowed to run in the state. By July 2017, the bill had passed, and daily fantasy sports betting was legalized in New Hampshire with names like Fanduel and DraftKings already able to provide services to the state. And these are easily some of the best online gambling sites in New Hampshire for DFS already. Once the final details of revenue and taxing were hashed out, it was all systems go for DFS. As such, you can now put together your favorite teams and challenge your friends for real money.
There are plenty of social casinos in New Hampshire to play on right now. In fact, we would even go as far as to say that some of the best online gambling sites in New Hampshire are actual social casinos. You may not be able to play online casinos for real money in NH, but you can still bet on slots, poker and other casino games using sweepstakes coins. These social casinos allow you to play these games while never actually depositing any real cash of your own or winning any money directly. You can win some cool prizes though so if you want all of the casino fun without any of the capital risk then the social casinos available in New Hampshire are the place for you to be.
Aside from all of the above that we mentioned, there is not much else for you to gamble on in New Hampshire. However, that doesn’t mean that there is absolutely nothing. There is of course the national lottery that runs weekly where you can buy tickets for. We wouldn’t necessarily call that riveting but hey, it's an option.
There are also charitable bingo games and other gaming variants that you can take part in both online and in person as well. And that really is all that there is aside from the more mainstream options that we have already discussed in our review.
There was only ever going to be one real suggestion for our editor’s recommendation and that is DraftKings. This is of course because DraftKings is the only online operator that is available for legal sports betting in New Hampshire right now after signing a 6-year deal.
And while they may be the only operator available, that does not speak to the quality of the site. DraftKings is one of the biggest names in the gambling industry in the US for a reason. They not only operate one of the best daily fantasy sports sites, but they also provide you with a plethora of different sporting events to bet on outright as well. There are thousands of betting markets to choose from, live streaming capabilities and the sleek live betting features as well.
On top of all of that, you can claim an exciting welcome bonus and some handy weekly promotions as well. If you are interested in sports betting and generous promotions, then check out DraftKings today.
To be perfectly honest, we don’t know. We can make some educated guesses on where the momentum is swinging right now but it would seem that it's still going to take some time before you’ll see any bills for casino gaming being introduced. The same can be said for brick and mortar establishments and poker as well. Here at CaptainGambling, we do everything that we can to keep you updated so check back with us regularly to find out if New Hampshire has loosened its laws with regards to casino gaming and poker. Keep an eye on what other states are doing too. Asking “Is online gambling legal in Rhode Island?” could well give you a clue for the future of online gambling in New Hampshire!
And that brings our review of New Hampshire online gambling to a close. As you can see, New Hampshire has somehow found itself right in the middle of being gambling friendly but also averse to any other major changes to their current legislation. So, sports betting fans will be pleased that they can now sink their teeth into betting on their favorite teams with DraftKings. However, the casino gaming fans are left in the cold right now and they won’t see any warmth for some time it would seem.
