Sports betting in Maryland will be governed by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission. This is the state’s gambling authority who has the power to issue licenses and regulate each of the online sportsbooks.
Any sportsbook operating in Maryland without the relevant licensing will be acting illegally. Until mobile sports betting goes live, your only options for legally betting on sport in Maryland will be able to do so in person at one of the state’s licensed casinos.
Maryland actually legalized online sports betting back in 2021, but it’s taken a long time to get the legal framework in place. But now it looks like Marylanders could enjoy legal online sports betting before Thanksgiving. This will be a major boost for the state as it’s thought that gambling tax revenues could bring in anywhere up to $30 million in the first year of operation.
Like many other states, you’ll have to be at least 21 years old to enjoy online sports betting in Maryland. Plus each legal sportsbook app that you download will include geolocation software to ensure that you are playing from somewhere within the state borders.
Which sportsbooks will be approved by the Maryland gambling bill?
It’s expected that there will initially be 10 licenses granted to sportsbooks to legally operate in Maryland, although many more operators are expected to join the fray.
