An Introduction to Maple Leafs betting

Second only to the New York Rangers, the Maple Leafs is the most valuable franchise in the NHL. They also have the most Stanley Cups in NHL history, second only to their bitter rivals the Montreal Canadiens. It’s hardly surprising then that the Maple Leafs is also one of the most bet-on teams in the NHL. When it comes to Ontario-based teams, Maple Leafs games also tend to be the most popular go-to, ahead of placing a bet on Raptors or Blue Jays games.

Here at CaptainGambling, you can keep yourself up-to-date with all of the latest Maple Leafs betting odds, tips, and picks. This is true for both games and for their playoff and Stanley Cup odds throughout the NHL season in 2023. Additionally, you can also keep an eye on the standings and the team and player stats. Studying your stats is key when it comes to betting on the Leafs.

Yes, you have actually been able to legally place a bet on NHL in Ontario for some time now. However, things are better than they have ever been since August 2021 for online sports betting in Ontario. Previously, you largely had to look to overseas sportsbooks to make online sports bets. Overseas sportsbooks were legal through a loophole, which led to this being known as the “gray market”.

However, now in 2023, Ontario has its very own fully-legal and regulated market thanks to a big legislative change that saw the sports betting prohibition lifted across the whole of Canada. You can check out the best sportsbook in Ontario right here at CaptainGambling and start placing bets on the Maple Leafs today. What follows below in this article is our complete betting guide for the Maple Leafs, from the most common betting lines, to finding the best odds and making the most accurate predictions possible.

The common ways to bet on Maple Leafs games

Single-game betting is the most common go-to when it comes to wagering on Leafs games. There are multiple ways in which you can bet on the NHL in 2023 - it’s not only about picking a winner and loser for each game. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at the most common betting lines that you’ll come across for the Maple Leafs. This will be essential reading for those of you who are looking to bet on the NHL for the first time ever.

 The Maple Leafs moneyline explained

The moneyline is the bread and butter of all sports betting lines. With an NHL moneyline, what you can see is the direct odds for each team to win the game. Naturally, the favorite will be offered at shorter odds as their chance of winning is greater. Meanwhile, the odds for the underdog will be the exact opposite of that.

An example of a Maple Leafs moneyline is as follows:

Maple Leafs -150

Senators +110

In this example, we can clearly see that the Maple Leafs are favorites, as they are being offered at minus odds. If a team is offered at minus odds, it means that they have an implied probability of winning that is greater than 50%.

A team at plus odds has an implied probability of less than 50%. In this case, the Maple Leafs have a 60% probability of winning, while the Senators have a 47.6% probability. The more mathematically astute among you may have noticed that the total probability percentage here is 107.6%. That additional 7.6% is known as the overround and is, in part, what protects the bookmaker's profits.

How to calculate your potential returns from an NHL moneyline

Calculating your potential winnings from the above example is fairly simple. Because the Leafs are being offered at minus odds, the 150 figure represents how much you would need to stake in order to return a potential profit of $100. With the Senators being offered at plus odds, the 110 figure is how much profit you would stand to win from a $100 stake.

The above example is using American odds, which is the most commonly used format in the US. However, in Canada, you may also come across decimal odds on the moneyline as well.

The above example in decimal format would be as follows:

Maple Leafs -1.67

Senators 2.1

You can calculate your total returns with decimal odds simply by multiplying your stake by the odds. For example, if you were to bet on Senators to win with a $10 stake on the above, your total potential returns would be $10 x 2.1 = $21. A $10 stake on the Maple Leafs would therefore have potential returns of $16.70.

What is a puck line bet on Maple Leafs?

If you’ve ever bet on Blue Jays games, then you’re probably familiar with the run line, if you’ve bet on the NFL, CFL, or NBA, then you should know all about the points spread. The puck line is the NHL’s answer to both of those. Just like the points spread, the puck line works by giving the favorite a handicap and the underdog an advantage.

The only real difference between the NHL puck line and points spreads in the NFL and NBA, is that the puck line is generally fixed at 1.5 for the majority of games. By their very nature, hockey games tend to be close by the end, therefore a game would have to be considered exceptionally one-sided for a sportsbook to offer a 2.5 line. However, in cases where the two teams are evenly matched, you might see a puck line of 0.5.

Example of an NHL puck line:

Maple Leafs -1.5

Senators +1.5

In the above example, the Maple Leafs have been given a 1.5 goal deduction because they are the favorites. The Sens, meanwhile, have been given a 1.5 goal advantage. If you were to bet on Maple Leafs in this case, they would need to win by at least two goals in order for you to win. If you bet on the Senators, your bet would still win if they lose, so long as they stay within a goal of the Leafs.

Props betting on Maple Leafs

When it comes to betting on the Leafs, you don’t always have to focus on the overall outcome of the game. Alternatively, you can also bet on other factors within the game that do not directly influence who wins or loses the game. This is known as props betting, which is short for “proposition betting”.

Most commonly, props betting involves betting on game stats, however other probabilities in a game also come into it. The most common type of props bet, which sportsbooks usually display alongside the moneyline and puck line, is the over/under. Let’s take a look at how this works in more detail below.

Placing an over/under bet on Maple Leafs

The over/under betting line, is also sometimes referred to as the “totals” line. With the over/under line, the bookmaker will give you a figure which represents the projected total amount of goals that will be scored by both teams combined in the game. You then have the choice between betting on the total being less than, or more than that amount.

For example, let’s take the most common NHL over/under line, which is 5.5. If you were to bet the under on this line, then you would win if the game ended with five or less goals having been scored by both teams combined. If you bet on the over, there would need to be at least six total goals.

Other types of Maple Leafs prop bets

The aforementioned over/under line is just one of many prop bets that you can place on any given Maple Leafs game. The principle of the over/under can also be applied to many other total stats that can happen in a game. For example, you could go more specific and bet the over/under solely for the Maple Leafs’ total goals in the game. You could also bet on the goals scored by an individual forward player or the number of saves the goaltender will make.

Can you bet on Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup 2023?

When it comes to betting on the Leafs, you don’t just have to look at each individual game - you can also bet on things in the mid-to-long terms. This type of betting is, quite aptly, known as futures betting. This involves betting on things such as the Maple Leafs to make the playoffs or win the Stanley Cup. You can also bet on players' futures, such as MVP and rookie of the year.

Futures odds, such as the potential Stanley Cup winners, can be offered as early as the day after the previous season’s final. However, the odds will of course change drastically the closer we get to the end of the NHL season. Once the season begins, you’ll generally see that the odds will change on a daily basis for each team.
