Will I need to make a sports betting account separate from my DFS account in Ontario?

With Ontario sports betting set to launch in its new form on April 4, 2022, many of you could well be wondering what the status is with your DFS account linking up with your sportsbook account.

Popular sportsbook operators, such as FanDuel and DraftKings are also DFS platforms that have been popular with Canadian players for years now. So what’s the deal - will you automatically have a sportsbook account if you have a DFS account?

FanDuel and DraftKings - Are DFS and Sportsbook accounts the same?

We should start off here by pointing out that neither FanDuel nor DraftKings are yet legal in Ontario, nor have they been named as one of the sportsbooks that are definitely set to launch on April 4. However, over 30 licenses have been applied for in Ontario and we have it on good authority that both operators will launch in Ontario sometime in the near future.

Do you already have a FanDuel or DraftKings DFS account? Let’s find out what will happen when FanDuel and DraftKings launch in Ontario.

The real answer to our question lies somewhere firmly between the yes and the no. You will technically speaking, have to make a new account, and an existing DFS account will not automatically grant you access to the sportsbook provided by the same operator. However, you will be able to sign up for the sportsbook and create an account using the same email and details. If you open your sportsbook account with the same email as your DFS account, you will then be able to link the two up afterward.

Why are DFS and Sportsbook accounts to be opened separately?

There are multiple reasons why your DFS and Sportsbook accounts have to be registered separately. However, at the end of the day, it mostly comes down to legislation. Unsurprisingly, single-game sports betting is subjected to much stricter regulation and therefore has a lot more restrictions to be considered. For starters, the legal DFS age in Ontario is 18+, while the legal single-game sports betting age is 19+. Therefore DFS players aged 18 will be unable to open a sportsbook account with the same operator until their 19th birthday.

Will I be able to transfer money between my DFS and sportsbook accounts?

With both FanDuel and DraftKings, you can’t transfer funds between your DFS and sportsbook accounts. However, what you can do on both sites is use your contest winnings from DFS to place a bet in the sportsbooks. That also works the other way around as well - you can use sportsbook bet winnings to enter a DFS contest. We’re taking this information from FanDuel and DraftKings’ operations in all legal US gambling states in which they operate. However, we have no reason to believe that things will be any different when the two platforms launch their sportsbooks in Ontario.

When will FanDuel and DraftKings launch in Ontario?

As mentioned previously, we don’t yet have an exact date for the launch of the DraftKings or FanDuel sportsbooks in Ontario. However, we do have a set date for the launch of several other sportsbooks, including theScore Bet and BetRivers. We are also very confident that both FanDuel and DraftKings will launch their sportsbooks at some point in Ontario. Given that both platforms have already enjoyed success with their DFS platforms in Canada’s largest province, they will be very keen to get their sportsbook live as soon as they possibly can.
