When will single-game sports betting launch in Ontario?

Ontario sports betting: The AGCO and The OLG

Sports betting has been popular amongst Ontario sports fans since 1985 - when it was first legalized across the province. However, you were only able to wager on parlays at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s Proline+ sportsbook.

Over time, you may have began to make use of offshore bettings sites, risking your personal and financial details, in the hopes of finding improved odds, and market availability. It is due to this, that the Ontario sports betting market looks as it does today.

In June 2021, it was confirmed by Canadian lawmakers that online sports betting platforms would now be legally allowed to provide single-game sports betting markets. Something Ontario's Proline+ wasted no time implementing, once the bill officially passed in August that same year. The successes were evident, with a drastic cut in offshore betting usage; however, there was still a lot that needed to be done to draw sports bettors away from the offshore betting world.

Alongside amendments to the legality of single-game sports betting, Canadian lawmakers and the Alcohol Gambling Commision of Ontario (AGCO) came together to create the AGCO iGaming subsidiary - a new section of the AGCO that is now responsible for overseeing the commercial online casino and sports betting scene across Ontario.

As the focus on keeping you as a resident away from the offshore betting scene intensified, discussions were held regarding ways in which a commercial sports betting scene would work across Ontario.

Projected launch and sportsbook interest

Unsurprisingly, after the evident successes of single-game sports betting across the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s ProLine+, the decision to expand Ontario’s sports betting market was confirmed in August 2021.

By the end of August, Ontario was informed that an official launch for commercial online and mobile sports betting looked set for December 2021. However, despite the great interest from many top sportsbooks, including DraftKings, theScore bet, BetRivers, Fanduel, and Caesars, amongst others, the official launch had to be set back.

It was later revealed that the reason for the hold up was because official terms regarding tax revenue were not yet able to be finalized. As we have seen from many US states, tax revenue is a big part of the process and can considerably help towards the development of the state/province.

Thankfully, plans look back on track and an official launch of commercial sports betting is set for 4th April, 2022. After the successful legalization of single-game sports wagering across the state, we can only expect that this will boost your current online sports betting experience across Ontario further.
