Toronto Blue Jays snatch win over Tampa Bay Rays 9-2

Toronto Blue Jays snatched a victory over Tampa Bay Rays after ninth inning game at their home ground Rogers Centre on July 1 2022.

The Blue Jays secured the 9-2 after the batting play from Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk, who had three consecutive doubles.

It was Toronto’s first home game on Canada Day since 2019 and thousands of fans at the pitch started singing ‘O Canada’ after the win. Currently, the Blue Jays continue on their winning streak and are on a 44-33 win-loss record.

Celebrating the win at Canada

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said the win against Tampa Bay was due to all the Blue Jays players contributing to the match. "This is one of those things that reminds you how great is to play for Canada," he said.

"To play for a country is awesome," Montoyo added.

He said also it was a relief that they were able to return to Rogers Centre after spending most of 2020 and 2021 on the road.

Previously, the Blue Jays played home pitch in Dunedin, Florida, and Buffalo, New York because of COVID-19 pandemic regulations.

After the game, Blue Jays’ outfielder Cavan Biggio said the team missed their home ground and was looking forward to seeing the crowd on the Rogers Centre’s deck.

"In 2020 and 2021 we definitely missed this place," he said.

Tickets for 49,445 people that came to see the game live were sold out, and 15,000 fans received a free red Blue Jays with George Springer's name on the back.

Match recap

Together with Bichette, Guerrero Jr., and Kirk with a total of five doubles, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. contributed to the team winning as he hit a solo homer in the seventh.

Also, Blue Jays starting pitcher José Berríos had himself three strikeouts and allowed two runs on eight hits after five innings. It was Berríos' pitching debut for Toronto at home, which he said was emotional for him.

"I've been hearing about this day a lot but being here, to get the opportunity to pitch this day, it was a little bit emotional," he said.

Currently, the 28-year-old pitcher went 6-4 in his last ten games.

Montoyo said that it was Berríos who made the plays on the Blue Jays’ offense scheme. "Our pitching gives us a chance and our offense is going to go, even against a pitcher like Kluber," said Montoyo.

"That's exactly what happened. Berríos kept us in the game and then the offense got going," he explained.

When it comes to stats, Rays’ pitcher Cory Kluber pitched only for three innings and had two walks while allowing five runs.

In the hitting lineup, Bichette hit in the third inning with a double off the right wall. Gurriel and Biggio were on the base and ran back home to score for the Blue Jays.

Still, in the same inning, Guerrero Jr. hit the left sideline to bring in Springer and Bichette. On the next pitch, Kirk made Guererro run back home and the Blue Jays took a 5-1 lead from the Rays.

In the sixth inning, Springer made a run after hitting a single, and Gurriel together with Santiago Espinal for a 7-2 lead.

Guerrero's hit drove home Biggio from third base, then Gurriel batted and returned to plate to complete the 9-2 victory in eight innings.

The loss from Toronto was the Ray's fourth straight loss and both of the teams will have their last matchup of three-games-series on July 2.
