Is Streaming going to change Sports Betting in the US?

Legal sports betting is rapidly wrapping itself like a blanket around the U.S., with more than 35 states now having legalized the activity, and more bound to come.

Online services that stream entertainment, whether it’s movies, TV shows, miniseries, or sports, are already ubiquitous. Consumers expect to be able to consume content via services like Netflix, Hulu, Apple+, Amazon Prime Video, and much more.

How might live streaming alter the way people place their sports bets?

Streaming services have revolutionized the way Americans watch programming, shifting the paradigm from scheduled broadcasts to on-demand viewing.

This change allows viewers to watch their favorite shows and movies whenever and wherever they choose, eliminating the constraints of traditional TV schedules.

Platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ offer vast libraries of content, catering to diverse tastes and preferences. The binge-watching phenomenon, where entire seasons are consumed in one sitting, has become a cultural norm, altering how stories are told and consumed.

Personalized Recommendations & User Experience

Additionally, live streaming services provide personalized recommendations based on viewing habits, enhancing the user experience. This shift has also influenced content production, with a greater emphasis on original programming tailored for streaming audiences.

The accessibility and convenience of streaming have democratized content consumption, making it easier for independent creators to reach wide audiences.

Overall, streaming services have fundamentally transformed viewing habits and content delivery, fostering a more dynamic and user-centric entertainment landscape.

Netflix x NFL

Recently, Netflix announced its deal with the NFL in which it will broadcast as many as three pro football games in Christmas day in coming years. Such a partnership brings a wildly popular sport and brand to a streaming service.

With the ability to provide interactive experiences that broadcast TV and cable cannot, a streaming platform like Netflix could spice things up with sports betting options.

That isn’t going to happen in 2024, but in the future, we may see a streaming platform team with a sports betting operator to add odds or special same-game parlay options that viewers can choose from their Netflix menu, for example.

We’re going to see new content built around sports betting too. With so many podcasts and YouTube channels dedicated to sports and betting, it’s only a matter of time before streaming platforms venture into that space to find new programming. New shows attract new types of viewers and most importantly, new subscribers.

For sports bettors, the marriage of pro leagues with streaming platforms can only be a good thing long-term. While it may be annoying that some games are being shifted away from broadcast TV, get used to it: the future is here, and it’s going to happen wherever people are watching their content.
