A new federal lobbying group, Stop Predatory Gambling, is aiming to shut down both the online gambling industry an even the state lottery.
Les Bernal, who runs Stop Predatory Gambling, said, “It is essential that these games be shut down between now and at least 30 days after federal stimulus payments are received by American families. There is a mountain of facts showing many citizens gamble on the lottery to change their financial condition, and even more so when they are feeling a sense of desperation.”
This is despite the fact that states get a large amount of tax revenue from both their lottery systems and online gambling. Education, for example, is funded by lotteries in many states.
But Bernal is not convinced by that, and said, “State governments have turned a nation of small earners, who could be small savers, into a nation of habitual gamblers. We strongly urge you to act now, before the assistance that American families will be receiving ends up being taken by state lottery tickets, rather than invested in immediate needs and churned through our economy for the benefit of everyone.”
It is unclear just how much power Stop Predatory Gambling will have. After all, in 2019 and 2020 several states started allowing online gambling, and no state is seriously considering getting rid of its lottery.
Players must be 21 years of age or older or reach the minimum age for gambling in their respective state and located in jurisdictions where online gambling is legal. Please play responsibly.
