Can Lions Take Baby Step to the Super Bowl After Near-Miss?

The Detroit Lions came tantalizingly close to a historic Super Bowl appearance last season, narrowly missing out after a hard-fought postseason run.

Their resurgence under head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes has reshaped the franchise, transforming a team once mired in mediocrity into a legitimate contender.

Though they fell short, the Lions demonstrated that they have the talent, leadership, and momentum to make another deep run in the NFL, and there’s every reason to believe they can reach their first Super Bowl soon.

Offense Leading the Charge

The Lions finished the regular season with a 12-5 record, marking their best season since the early 1990s. Their offense, led by quarterback Jared Goff, ranked fourth in the NFL in points scored and third in total yards.

  • Goff enjoyed a career resurgence, throwing for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns.

The Lions' offensive line, anchored by All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell, was one of the best in football, allowing the second-fewest sacks in the league. Sewell’s dominance, combined with the growth of young stars like Amon-Ra St.

Brown and rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, made Detroit's offense a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Defensive Improvements

Defensively, the Lions had their ups and downs, but the unit improved over the course of the season. Aidan Hutchinson, the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, led the team with 11.5 sacks and earned a reputation as one of the league’s most disruptive young pass-rushers.

The addition of rookie linebacker Jack Campbell further solidified the middle of the defense, as his leadership and playmaking ability stood out.

GM Brad Holmes: Roster Maestro

Much of Detroit’s success can be traced back to GM Brad Holmes, whose knack for drafting has completely revitalized the franchise. Since taking over in 2021, Holmes has hit on nearly every major pick, including Sewell, St. Brown, Hutchinson, and LaPorta.

  1. Holmes’ ability to find impact players in both the early and late rounds of the draft is a key reason why the Lions are now a team to be reckoned with.
  2. His success in drafting versatile players who fit Campbell’s vision has created a roster that is both talented and tough.

Holmes has also proven adept in free agency. Recently, the Lions signed wide receiver Tim Patrick from the Broncos, a savvy move to bolster the receiving corps.

While Patrick may not be a household name, he’s a reliable deep threat and can play an important complementary role alongside St. Brown, giving Goff another weapon in an already explosive offense. Before a recent injury, Brown had two seasons of 700+ yards receiving for Denver.

Key Players for Future Success

Amon-Ra St. Brown has established himself as one of the best young wide receivers in the league, with 119 catches for 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. His ability to create separation and make critical plays on third down makes him indispensable in Detroit’s offense.

However, the emergence of tight end Sam LaPorta is equally important.

  • As a rookie, LaPorta caught 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns, quickly becoming one of Goff’s favorite targets.
  • His versatility as both a blocker and receiver adds another dimension to the Lions' offense, keeping defenses on their heels.

Penei Sewell, now a two-time All-Pro, anchors an offensive line that is not only physical but also athletic. His ability to protect Goff and open up running lanes for backs like David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs is a significant reason the Lions can control the pace of the game.

Sewell’s dominance up front sets the tone for the entire team, and his continued excellence will be vital to Detroit’s chances of making another playoff push.

The Road Ahead

The Lions’ blueprint for success is clear: a balanced offense, young star power, and continued growth on defense. Their offensive firepower, combined with Goff’s steady hand, should keep them among the top units in the NFL.

If the defense can take another step forward, especially with young talents like Hutchinson and Campbell, Detroit has every reason to believe they can get back to the playoffs and push even further.

With Brad Holmes' elite drafting ability, the Lions’ future is brighter than it’s been in decades. They’ve assembled a roster capable of competing with the best teams in the league, and with another strong season, the Lions could be on the verge of making history.
