Are there any Canadian-based sportsbooks?

Online sportsbooks are set to launch in Ontario in April 2022, with the gambling law also changing in a number of other Canadian provinces. But are there any homegrown operators set to launch?

canadian sportsbooks ontario

Overseas sportsbooks and online casinos have been legally available to Canadian players through a loophole in the law. However, the new legislative changes in Ontario now mean that sportsbooks regulated by the state government and iGaming Ontario will be operating instead, providing a closer to home and more concretely legal avenue for bettors.

What sportsbooks are based in Canada?

Provinces across Canada offer a version of Ontario's Proline+, operated by the OLG, which also runs the Ontario lottery and is the only online casino available in the province.

However, if we’re looking ahead to the online sports betting launch in Ontario in April 2022, we will see a number of sportsbooks launch alongside the government-operated Proline+. So the question here is, where in Canada are the forthcoming sportsbooks going to be based?

Is there an online sportsbook based in Ontario?

There is an online sportsbook based in Ontario - and we’re not talking only about Proline+ here. Despite the free(ish) market, US-style online sports betting industry model not yet being live in Ontario, there is already a homegrown sportsbook up and running. theScore Bet is based in Toronto and has been operating for a few years already. Currently, theScore Bet is already live in four US states - Colorado, New Jersey, Indiana, and Iowa.

Canadian sports fans will most likely already be familiar with theScore Media and Gaming, which is the original company that launched back in 2012. The original theScore website is best known as a sports news and rumors website. theScore Bet launched in the US following the lifting of the federal ban on gambling in 2018.

Is theScore Bet going to launch in Canada?

It’s been somewhat bizarre that for a few years now, theScore Bet has been live in the US, and is still not available for Canadian bettors despite being based in Toronto. However, that is all about to change in April 2022, as theScore Bet is one of the online sportsbooks that’s set to go live in Ontario!

Single-game sports betting is set to go live on April 4, when Ontarians aged 19+ will be able to legally bet on professional sports games. You can check out our expert’s review of theScore Bet here right now at CaptainGambling. Additionally, you can also find all of the latest bonus codes for theScore Bet. You can sign-up to receive updates from theScore Bet about their Ontario sportsbook launch by visiting their website today.

Are there any retail sportsbooks in Ontario?

If you live in or have recently visited Toronto, Ottawa, or Hamilton, you probably haven’t noticed the presence of any retail sportsbooks. That is because, at the time of writing, there are no single-game betting outlets located in any of Ontario's major cities or towns. You can, however, place an in-person bet at The Sports Lounge at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino. If it’s horse racing betting you’re after, then you can place bets at the track as well. However, the biggest and most exciting changes are coming in the online betting sphere - so we would turn your attention to that.

Are there any more Canadian-based sportsbooks likely to appear in the future?

At the moment, the only answer that we can give you here is completely speculative, but all the signs are most definitely positive. Given that the online and retail sports betting landscapes in Ontario and across Canada are set to change for the better thanks to legislative action, this should only inspire more homegrown sportsbooks to start up in Canada. If and when any new Canadian-based sportsbooks launch in Canada, CaptainGamling will be the first to let you know.
