Angels pitcher Archie Bradley suffered broken elbow during brawl with Mariners

The Los Angeles Angels had to place their reliever, Archie Bradley, on the 15-day injured list after an incident connected to the brawl between the team and the during a game on Sunday. On Tuesday, the Angels' representative announced that the player sustained a fracture in his right elbow.

The brawl was caused by heightened tension between the Angels in the eighth game during the second inning. It is known that the tension between the team first rose when the Mariners' Eric Swanson threw the ball too close to the Angels' Mike Trout's head in the seventh game.

When the Angels brought Andrew Wantz as starting pitcher the next day, the Mariners suspected he was there to retaliate for the previous night's incident between Swanson and Trout as Wantz began the game by throwing a pitch behind Julio Rodríguez's head. After several more foul plays, the conflict escalated as the Mariners began to attack the opposing team.

Bradley got his injury when he was trying to climb on the dugout railing. He fell and landed on his right arm, causing a fractured bone. The Angels announced his placement on the injury list before the second game against the Chicago White Sox.

A fractured elbow is common among baseball players, especially when landing on an outstretched arm. However, as Bradley is a valuable pitcher for the team, the Angels would want Bradley to maintain his motion range, and it is likely that the 29-year-old won't be back for about a month.

This is not the only substantial injury caused by Sunday's brawl. On Monday, the Mariners placed Luis Torrens on the 10-day injured list. The catcher sustained a left shoulder injury as the result of the altercation.

Investigation by Major League Baseball

The MLB had launched an investigation of this brawl, which led to the league giving penalties to both teams. The scale of this case might be one of the largest in this season as penalties were announced in batches.

Two Angels' managers, Phil Nevin and Dom Chiti were suspended from games. Nevin received a 10-game suspension, while Chiti got five. Both managers started their penalties on Monday. Other staff members receiving suspensions from the board include Ray Montgomery (bench coach) with two games and Bill Haselman (catching coach) with one game. According to the regulation, managers and coaches are unable to make appeals.

The Angels must also continue the next few games without some players. Anthony Rendon, baseman, received a five-game suspension. Wantz won't be able to join three games due to a foul throw. Ryan Tepera and Raisel Iglesias got suspended for three and two games respectively. However, they appealed to the board, and their disciplinary actions are still awaiting the hearings.

The league also handed penalties to the Mariners. Rodríguez and J. P. Crawford got suspended for three games, while Jesse Winker received seven for instigating the fight. All three players have appealed to the MLB. For now, the three can continue playing while waiting for their verdict.

Both teams must now proceed without some of their star players. The Angels and the Mariners will meet again at the beginning of August, this time at the Mariners' turf.
