The ND lottery was one of the latest to be established, having only been founded in 2004. Even then, the voter referendum allowed for the state lottery to join multi-state lottery draws but prohibited any in-state lotteries.
Residents of North Dakota can only participate in multi-state drawings and there are no scratch cards or other offerings. North Dakota is one of just six US states where lottery and lotto winners can stay anonymous, and proceeds from 22% goes to the State General Fund. 51% percent of total sales go towards various lottery prizes. The minimum lottery age is 18.
The ND Lottery site has lots of interesting promotions that come in the place of a regular sign up offer. We saw lots of deals that gave you chance to win goodies like an Apple Watch Series Six or even an entire electronics entertainment package. You’ll always have to take part in special promotional games like Points for Drawings to win anything from these deals, but we think that they looked like they were great value for money.
The North Dakota state lottery site offers a simple and easy way to get involved with all major draws available in the state, which really makes things quite convenient. Of course, the selection of available draws is somewhat limited due to circumstances described up to this point and you also won’t be able to find any scratchers or other games. These simply aren’t available in ND so you can’t expect to find them on the lottery site, either.
If you want to get involved with major draws, though, including Mega Millions, Powerball, Lucky for Life, and American Lotto, you’ll find the ND lottery site and their mobile app make everything as simple as you could possibly hope for.
The first thing you’ll need to do to gain access to all the online options is register with the lottery site. You can do this using your desktop computer or by downloading the mobile app. The app is very modern and offers many functionalities, such as easily buying tickets using the Pick and Click system and scanning tickets to check ND lottery winning numbers for various draws. The Android app is not available in Google store and you’ll need to download it straight from the lottery site. Among other details required during registration, you’ll need to provide the last four digits of your Social Security Number.
Once registered, you can easily purchase tickets for all the draws described earlier in this article, namely Mega Millions, Lotto America, Powerball, Lucky for Life, and 2by2. Purchases are done using credit card and you can buy tickets for a single draw or for several draws in advance.
When it comes to winnings, all prizes below USD 600 are issued to your Player Club account and can be withdrawn from there. All prizes of USD 600 or more can only be claimed at the ND lottery offices located in Bismarck, ND.
Remember that you can’t actually buy the lottery tickets at the North Dakota lottery site. Thankfully, you can do this with a payment method of your choosing at well over 400 ND Lottery outlets across the Peace Garden State. Hopefully the North Dakota Lottery site will put on some kind of online lottery ticket purchase platform soon.
We found that the North Dakota Lottery operates a friendly and professional customer support team. You can call them direct via the toll-free telephone number and there’s also an email support address. We’d have liked to have seen some kind of live chat service here, but we found that the FAQ had all of the basics to help us get started.
In terms of lottery, North Dakota was really late to join the party. For the North Dakota lottery to be established, the state constitution had to be changed, which happened in 2002. This is when voters supported an important constitutional amendment, which finally made it possible for the state to start offering lottery games.
However, the amendment only allowed the state to join multi-state lotteries, while preventing any in-state based games. Therefore, residents can only buy tickets for big draws while there are no smaller ND lotto games or scratch cards on offer. As mentioned, almost half of lottery proceeds are taken out of the prize fund.
The North Dakota state lottery site was initially launched in 2004 offering just some basic options. It was upgraded twice since, first in 2014 and then in 2018, when the new Pick & Click system was introduced. The system allowed players to purchase tickets for their all their favorite draws online, making things much easier and simpler.
The new site was set up in accordance with the latest interpretation of the Wire Act, which deemed that lotteries didn’t fall under provisions of the Act. This gave states free rein in terms of how they wanted to handle the sales of lottery tickets within their own borders.
In much the same vein, North Dakota doesn’t feature any special yearly or occasional draws or promotions for its players. There is nothing particular that ND residents have access to that isn’t also available to players from various other states.
Of course, players can participate in any special offers created by multi-state lotteries that North Dakota does sell tickets for. If and when this happens, players can buy tickets just like the rest and try their luck. However, the state itself doesn’t strive to offer any special drawings and we don’t see that changing at any point in the near future.
Historically speaking, there hasn’t been much support for lottery in general in North Dakota. This is why the state only joined the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) in 2004 after a lengthy legal battle and only because they believed lottery funds could be used for the benefit of the state. It is for these reasons that the state didn’t want to have any of its own games and only offers multi-state lottery tickets.
Despite this, the state has done a nice job with the lottery site, making sure players receive a great service across the board, on their computers and mobile devices alike. Given the lottery’s short history and seemingly low general interest, this is definitely a good indicator that officials still want to make sure that those who want to play lottery online are treated right. Other than this, though, there haven’t been any special events in the history of ND lottery.
While the total number of offered games may not be as impressive, players still do have access to all major draws like Mega Millions, Powerball, and several other selections. Therefore, residents of ND still have a great shot at winning some huge prizes and they can get their tickets online at any time, which is quite convenient.
Powerball tickets are worth USD 2 each and players from ND can buy them at various retail locations and online alike. To win the main jackpot, you need to match all five numbers plus the Powerball, and odds for this are 1 in 292,201,338. Players can also purchase the Power Play option for additional USD 1 per ticket, adding multipliers up to 10x to other prizes. The biggest score besides the jackpot is USD 2,000,000 for matching just five white balls without the Powerball, with odds of around 1 in 11.5 million.
All Mega Millions winners have an opportunity to claim the entire prize (after taxes) paid in annuities over 30 years or as a lump sum, in which case they are offered a smaller cash amount but paid all at once.
Players can add All Star Bonus to their tickets for an extra dollar per play, which adds win multipliers to all non-jackpot wins. Multipliers start at 2x and increase up to 5x. Lotto America draws take place two times a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Lucky for Life draws take place two times a week, on Mondays and Thursdays. Tickets are available for USD 2 and the goal is to guess all five numbers and the Lucky Ball to get the main score. For the second prize, 25 grand a year for life, you’ll need to guess five number without the Lucky Ball (a 1 in 1,8 million shot). There are no special multipliers or other options available to players here.
To win, players need to correctly guess two red and two blue numbers. There can be up to ten winners for each draw, with every winner taking home the main jackpot (USD 22,000 or USD 44,000). If there are more than ten winners in any particular draw, the maximum liability (i.e. USD 220,000 or USD 440,000) is split among all winners.
You’ll enjoy a much better chance of getting that lottery win when you form some kind of syndicate with friends or co-workers. Syndicates are supported by the North Dakota lottery, and you’ll find there are provisions made for identifying the group manager should the winnings be more or less than $600.
As already mentioned several times in this text, North Dakota doesn’t offer any special or proprietary games. This means that not only there aren’t any special lotto or lottery drawings but residents can’t even buy any scratch cards online or at local retailers.
This has been the situation pretty much since the lottery North Dakota has been established so it isn’t likely anything will change in this respect. State officials are happy to keep control over things, offering only tickets for lotteries happening outside of state borders without organizing any additional games of their own.
We were impressed with the fact that you could play all of the games at the North Dakota Lottery from some pretty low stakes. Not only could you play the likes of Mega Millions and Lucky For Life from just $2 at a take, but Lotto America could be played for just a single dollar. All of which should help you stay within your budget.
North Dakota may not be the best state for the fans of games of chance and lotteries, given the number of options is somewhat limited. However, you can still participate in pretty much all major draws so if that next big jackpot has your name on it, there is absolutely no reason to miss out. With the ND lottery site, you can make sure to never miss out on any draws so why not take advantage of this opportunity?
Lottery in North Dakota was established in 2004. However, the state only offers tickets for multi-state draws such as Powerball or American Lotto. There are no ND-specific games of any kind and players can’t even buy any scratch cards here.
You can play ND lottery online by simply registering on the site or downloading the mobile app on your phone. Once registered, you’ll be able to easily purchase tickets for all drawings offered in the state using your credit card.
In North Dakota, all wins of USD 600 are more are liable for taxation. You’ll need to pay the 24 percent federal tax and the 2.90 percent state tax. All things considered, ND is among more player-friendly states in terms of the state tax, so winners at least have that going for them.
This is because the law regulating the lottery, which was passed through an amendment to the state constitution in 2002, stipulates that only games taking place outside of ND are allowed. Hence, the state doesn’t organize any lottery drawings of its own or offers any scratch cards.
North Dakota is actually one of six US states where lottery winners can remain completely anonymous if they so choose. That’s why you’ll see most big winners listed on the North Dakota lottery site as Anonymous.

While there are always opportunities to make things better, there isn’t much we can hope for in ND in terms of changes to North Dakota lottery games offered online. Players have access to pretty much everything that’s available in land-based retail stores so there isn’t much that the lottery can do to improve the offering.
One thing that we might see in the future is more payment methods added to the mix, so that players can buy their tickets with even fewer complications. Adding PayPal, for example, would be something that customers from North Dakota would likely love to see as this is one of the preferred payment methods for US customers in general. Looking at all the changes that have already been implemented and constant work on improving the offering, this is definitely not a far-fetched proposition. Overall, the future looks good for the online segment of the lottery in the state.
