Played on a massive 5x6 grid and with a minimum of eight symbol combos required to win, there's certainly truth to the arguments that Gates of Olympus slots are bigger and better than most other Pragmatic Play games.
Like most other Pragmatic Play slots, Gates of Olympus has a high volatility rating and a sizeable RTP of 96.5%. This game may be totally different in terms of its theme, graphics, and design, but the gameplay of Gates of Olympus will definitely appeal to fans of Sweet Bonanza.
Gates of Olympus has a total of six reels each with five different rows, and you need combinations of at least eight of the same symbol in order to receive a payout. When you consider that a total of 30 symbols appear on the grid at any one time, this isn’t bad at all. If you do hit a combo, then the matching symbols disappear in a Tetris-style manner and allow more symbols to drop in. These keep happening until you don’t hit a combo, at which point, you move on to the next spin.
As we said in the intro to this article, the overall gameplay has more in common with Sweet Bonanza than it does with the likes of Rock Vegas slot and most other Pragmatic Play titles. You also have free spins and an Ante Bet feature, but we’ll get to that a little bit later on.
In total, there are nine basic symbols that payout when you hit combinations of between eight and 12. The five lower-value symbols come in the form of gemstones in a variety of different colors, while the higher-value symbols are as follows; chalice, ring, hourglass, and crown.
Unlike in the Might of Ra slot game, there is no Wild symbol at all. This isn’t a mishap or oversight on Pragmatic Play’s part, it’s just that games of this type aren’t really suited to a wild card element.
What you do still have are bonus multipliers and scatters, which are cast by Zeus himself, who is always present on the right of the grid. The Scatter symbol is Zeus himself, while bonus multipliers come in the form of four different colored orbs - green, blue, purple and red.
You need a minimum bet of just $0.20 per spin in order to play Gates of Olympus, just as is the case with the Elemental Gems Megaways slot from Pragmatic Play. The maximum bet that you can place is $125, and your winnings are capped at a multiplier of x5000.
Some sharp-eyed players and fans have noticed that this is lower than Sweet Bonanza, the game that we have already compared Gates of Olympus to on a couple of occasions in this article.
However, we aren’t going to include this as a negative point in our Gates of Olympus slot review, as you have almost zero chance of seeing a multiplier exceeding x5000 payout even if a slot game technically does have it.

Although the game might look a little different from the Mustang Gold slot, the basic principle of the pay table and its structure is largely the same. The four lower-value symbols are the ones that will most commonly hit and will see you land payouts of between x0.5 for a combo of eight blue gems and x20 for a combo of 12 or more red gems. Of course, you then have everything in between as well. The four higher value symbols - the chalice, ring, hourglass, and crown will get you a payout of between x3 and x100.
Things can really start to ramp up with the multiplier feature, where the orbs can see you secure multipliers of between x2 and x500. Landing four, five, or six Zeus scatter symbols will see you secure a payout of x3, x5, or x100 of your total bet. This will also get you 15 free spins, which triggers a bonus mode of sorts.
Once free spins are triggered, you enter a bonus play mode whereby the value of any multipliers that land will then add value to your existing ones. Additionally, you can keep the free spins mode going by getting x3 retriggers when you land a combo of three or more Zeus scatter symbols.

Gates of Olympus is one of only a handful of Pragmatic Play slots to have the Ante Post bet feature. In order to trigger this, you will have to raise your bet by 25% per spin - eg. a $1 becomes $1.25. In exchange, enough additional Zeus scatter symbols are put into play, which essentially doubles your chances of triggering free spins while playing.
There is also the bonus buy feature, which allows you to purchase bonus free spins for x100 of your total stake. However, this may be restricted in some regions and is therefore not guaranteed to be available across all social casinos and online betting sites.
Though the themes are often very different, the basic design of most casino slots from Pragmatic Play remains the same. That’s not a bad thing, as each game manages to be unique while retaining that recognizable Pragmatic Play brand and stamp. When it comes to Gates of Zeus though, Pragmatic Play has done particularly well in our opinion. The highlight of the graphics is definitely the Zeus figure on the right of your screen, who looks (relatively) realistic and majestic - and he even moves when he strikes his lightning to unleash those bonus multipliers!
When it comes to the soundtrack, players who are familiar with other pragmatic Play slots will find familiar ground here once again. Expect arcade-style background music that speeds up when you win or trigger a bonus feature. You can also expect all of the online slot game staples, such as the sound of cascading coins and canned cheering. Overall, it’s a game that looks absolutely amazing but doesn’t have much unique to offer in terms of soundtrack.
Gates of Olympus has a 96.5% RTP at its best and has hit that all-important five-star rating in terms of volatility. This RTP still sits above average, but most new slots being released on sites like the Betrivers.net social casino are now hitting a similar figure. Still, it’s certainly not a bad thing at all.
The volatility is great for more experienced players, as it provides more variety. However, inexperienced players might find it hard to follow the payout structure - unless you’re a math genius. If you are relatively new to slots, we recommend making use of the Gates of Olympus demo, which can be found on Pragmatic Play’s website. Alternatively, you might also find Gates of Olympus free play mode on certain social casinos and gambling sites.
There’s great news again here, as Gates of Olympus is available on all types of mobile devices. As well as being able to play it on social casino websites and betting apps, Gates of Olympus also has its own app, which can be downloaded from Google Play. For those concerned, Gates of Olympus isn’t a mobile-exclusive game, so you can still play it on your laptop or desktop as well.
Basically, if you like the gameplay and rules of Sweet Bonanza, but aren’t too much of a fan of the candy theme, then Gates of Olympus is the best alternative there is for you. The theme is cooler, the graphics are better and the gameplay is more or less exactly the same.
Technically, the max payout is lower, but the chances of anyone hitting a multiplier any higher than x5000 are very, very low anyway. Bottom line - experienced slot players should give this game a shot, while new players should try out the demo.
On some level, that is a matter of opinion, but you can see what the experts think here at CaptainGambling.com. We’ve tested, reviewed and rated this game, as well as many others from Pragmatic Play.
