You may already have heard the news - it is now legal for you to bet on online single-game sports in Ontario. Although it initially launched back in August 2021, Spring 2022 will bring some major changes.

These changes now mean that the Ontario online sports betting landscape will begin to resemble what we’ve come to know in legal US gambling states, such as New York and New Jersey. However, we shouldn’t forget that in-person single game sports wagering is still legal in Ontario as well.

Where can you bet on sports in Ontario?

Referring back to our question, you can place an in-person single-game sports wager at land-based casino sites in Ontario. Prior to August 2021, which saw the launch of online single-game sports wagering, you could only place parlay bets at casinos and other sports betting retail sites in Ontario. Now, single-game sports wagering is also permitted at all in-person retail sports betting outlets in Ontario, including those located within casinos.

Which Ontario casinos have sports betting?

Probably the biggest and best known sports betting casino location in Ontario is The Sports Lounge at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Resort. This casino resort is, of course, located nearby the world-famous tourist attraction, Niagara Falls, and is operated by Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment.

The kiosks here are open 24/7, with the counter being open 10am-midnight seven days a week. The neighboring Fallsview Casino Resort is also operated by Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, but it doesn’t yet have in-person sports betting available. However, we are led to believe that it is in the pipeline.

Do any Toronto casinos offer sports betting?

At this time, none of the casinos in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) currently have a retail sportsbook available, including Casino Rama. Your closest casino with in-person sports betting to Toronto is the aforementioned Seneca Niagara Casino & Resort.

This may surprise you, given the sheer size of Toronto and the sporting pedigree that it enjoys. The Toronto City proper is home to around 3 million residents, with an estimated 6 million-plus living in the GTA. Big changes are coming in April 2022, especially for the online sphere, so we can also expect some significant developments to the retail sector as well.

Toronto is home to some of Ontario and Canada’s biggest sports teams, including the Maple Leafs, the Raptors, and the Argonauts. If you’ve been to a game recently, you may have seen plenty of betting advertisements around.

However, these ads are directing you towards online and mobile wagering. Thanks to a loophole in the law, overseas sportsbooks have been able to operate in Canada for some years now. However, using overseas sportsbooks is soon to become a thing of the past.

Alternatives to betting on sports at casinos in Ontario

As we mentioned at the top of this article, online sports betting was launched in Ontario in August 2021. As things currently stand though, single-game sports betting online is available via Proline+, which is operated by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OGL).

However, big changes were announced in January 2022, and at least three online sportsbooks are set to launch their single-game wagering platforms in Ontario in April 2022, with many more set to come. According to multiple reports, applications have been submitted for around 30 sportsbook licenses. The Ontario government has teamed up with iGaming Ontario to regulate the online sports betting industry.

The verdict - Look to online betting for now

Tourists visiting Niagara Falls should by all means check out the Sports Lounge at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Resort. However, for tourists and Toronto residents such as yourself, the best course of action is to look to the mobile and online industry for your sports wagering needs. 2022 promises to be an exciting year, especially after the new sportsbook landscape launches in April.
