Hip-Hop Legends Performing At The Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show

NFL, Pepsi, and NFL’s live music entertainment strategist partner Roc Nation announced in September 2021 that the 2022 Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show on February 13th, would see live performances from Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. With the current odds for Super Bowl being so great, fans could be in for an amazing game jam-packed with action!

The NFL partnered with Roc Nation back in 2019. However, this is the most star-studded lineup we have seen to date. For hip-hop fanatics and rap enthusiasts, this is going to be an incredible show.

Jay-Z needs no introduction. The man behind Roc Nation and one of the main reasons this fantastic lineup has come together. He debuted back in the late '90s and has since released 13 studio albums. The talents of Jay-Z aren't limited to his performances though. In fact, he is also a well-respected entrepreneur, media proprietor, record executive, and more.  When it comes to Super Bowl LVI, sports fans will not be too interested in his latest business venture. We imagine they'll be waiting to hear the Musical Artists Hall of Famer drop "99 Problems".

Snoop Dogg is an icon, who first entered the scene back in 1992  - releasing his first album the following year. Since then, Snoop has gone on to release 18 studio albums, 17 compilation albums, and 5 collaborative albums. No doubt, many fans will be waiting to hear the popular 'Drop it like it's hot' echo around the arena on February 13th.

Dr.Dre is another veteran of the rap game. Throughout the years, Dre was heavily focused on production. However, from 1987-91, you'd expect to see Dr. Dre as part of the well-known, NWA. Dre's solo album,"The Chronic", was released in 1992. "2001" was released in 1999, before we saw his final studio album "Compton" released in 2015. Dre has collaborated with just about everyone in this year's lineup, so we are expecting some huge tracks to flood the stadium.

Mary J. Blige is next on our list - who began her career back in 1991. Since then she has gone on to release 13 studio albums,  win 9 Grammy Awards, 3 Golden Globes, and 2 Academy Awards. Is there anything she can't do? Affectionately known as the "Queen of Hop-Hop Soul", we can guarantee a big performance from Mary J. Blige.

The lyrical genius, Eminem, will also be blessing the stage at Super Bowl LVI. With 54 incredible singles under his belt, who knows what great tracks we will be witness to. Eminem is amongst the best-selling music artists of all time. Just one of the many reasons we are expecting some serious viewing figures at this year's Super Bowl!

Kendrick Lamar rightfully claims his position amongst these industry legends and looks set to perform at Super Bowl LVI. Kendrick has had global charting success, topping the charts in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. "Humble" became the first number-one single in the US as a lead artist. We eagerly await album number five!

A quick look at the years gone by...

Last year, we saw The Weekend put on a great performance. Before that,  Shakira and Jennifer Lopez were on the Super Bowl halftime lineup. They gave a critically acclaimed performance in front of over 104 million viewers. The show was a strong affirmation of cultural diversity with the electric delivery of songs that celebrated the Latin heritage and experiences of the stars in America.

Extra shots of euphoria got injected into the stadium as Shakira performed classics such as ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ and crowd surfed. Shortly after, Jennifer Lopez appeared in a black leather bodysuit. After arising from a skyscraper, she performed popular hits like ‘Jenny from the Block’ and ‘El Anillo’ before Shakira played the drums while Lopez’s daughter appeared on stage to sing ‘Let’s Get Loud’. The show has been compared to those of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Prince in previous years.

Other stars who have made it to the Super Bowl halftime performers list include:

  • Maroon 5 with guests Travis Scott and Big Boi
  • Justin Timberlake
  • Coldplay with guests Beyoncé and Bruno Mars
  • Katy Perry with guests Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz
  • Bruno Mars with guests Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Beyoncé with guests Destiny's Child
  • Madonna with guests Cee Lo Green, LMFAO, M.I.A., and Nicki Minaj
  • The Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash
  • The Who

Super Bowl halftime performances were much smaller in the earlier years until Michael Jackson headlined at the 1993 show. After the king of pop’s jaw-dropping show, the league made more efforts to get similar artists to perform longer-than-normal shows. More efforts were also made to create performances using themes. The use of themes continued until 2002, after U2’s tribute to lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Location and Time of Super Bowl LVI

A list of Super Bowl bets is rolling in as the big day quickly approaches. The game will be aired on NBC and live-streamed on the NBC app. Kickoff for the Super Bowl is usually 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. This means that the halftime show is expected to start around 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Los Angeles was awarded the game after the NFL moved the Super Bowl set for Los Angeles from 2021 to 2022. Due to a delay in the opening of the SoFi stadium, the Super Bowl had to be moved back a year. This is because the Super Bowl cannot be played in a new stadium within the first year of opening. The idea is to reduce any risks or problems that may arise.

With security concerns now put to bed, we can confirm that this year's Super Bowl will be held at:

SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, CA on February 13th, 2022.

So-Fi Stadium

The So-Fi Stadium is home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers and it is also where the LA Bowl college game takes place. The stadium opened back in 2020 and has already got an action-packed lineup ahead.

The College Football National Championships are set to be held there in 2023, WrestleMania 39 later the same year, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2028 summer Olympics, as well as some soccer and archery events, too.

However, before all of that, the SoFi stadium will be home to Super Bowl LVI.  This is the first Super Bowl to be hosted in Los Angeles since 1993, making it a special occasion for Los Angeles-based NFL fans.

Top five memorable Super Bowl moments

The Super Bowl is the NFL’s annual showpiece occasion and over the years it has produced some truly incredible games and performances. In this next section of our Super Bowl 2022 halftime show guide, we will pick our five most memorable moments from Super Bowl history.

Wide Right

In the 1990s, the Buffalo Bills lost in four consecutive Super Bowls. Their best opportunity of a win occurred in the first of those appearances. With time expiring, they had a 47 yard field goal attempt to win the game. Unfortunately, kicker Scott Norwood pushed his kick to the right, handing victory to the New York Giants. Over three decades later, the Bills are still searching for their first Vince Lombardi trophy.

The Tackle

With just a few seconds remaining in Super Bowl 34, the Tennessee Titans were down by seven points to the St Louis Rams, but had the ball at the Rams five-yard line. Receiver Kevin Dyson caught the final pass of the game close to the Rams goal line, but Rams linebacker Mike Jones produced a diving tackle to stop the outstretched Dyson inches short of the line and give the Rams the title.

The Interception

At Super Bowl 49, the Seattle Seahawks had the ball at the New England Patriots one-yard line with just a few seconds remaining. Instead of electing to run the ball into the endzone for the game-winning touchdown, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll controversially called a passing play. Quarterback Russell Wilson threw a short pass that was picked off on the goalline by Pat’s cornerback Malcolm Butler. The play sealed a narrow win for the Pats and sealed Butler’s place in Super Bowl history.

Harrison Goes All The Way

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was responsible for perhaps the most unexpected moment in Super Bowl history. With one play remaining at the end of the first half of Super Bowl 43, the game between the Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals was finely poised at 10-7 in favour of Pittsburgh. Looking to give the Cards a halftime lead, quarterback Kurt Warner threw a pass into the endzone, only for the 242 pound Harrison to intercept it and slowly make his way 100 yards downfield to score a touchdown as the clock expired. It put the Steelers 17-7 ahead at the interval and thanks to a last-minute touchdown from Santino Holmes, they held on for a famous victory.

The Helmet Catch

Perhaps the most famous Super Bowl play of all. With the New York Giants trailing the New England Patriots by going into the final minutes of Super Bowl 42 they needed a long touchdown drive to take the lead. Deep in his own half, quarterback Eli Manning somehow escaped from a hoard of defenders to unleash a deep ball that wide receiver David Tyree managed to catch with one hand, by pinning the ball against his helmet. Four plays later, Plaxico Burress caught the game-winning pass from Manning to give the Giants a famous win.

Conclusion

Super Bowl LVI promises to meet the expectations of fans around the world with gripping moments as teams clash for supremacy at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA. The highly anticipated halftime show could be equally as exciting with one of the most talked-about lineups of the modern era. Super Bowl viewers will be witness to a fantastic live set performed by hip-hop legends, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg. Much preparation has been done to ensure the day ends on a positive note. No doubt, there will be many special moments on February 13th after the game kicks off.
