Super Bowl Halftime Show 2021

Super Bowl Halftime Performers, Guests & Show List

The Super Bowl LV gives fans much to be excited about as title contenders fight for glory. As always, fans expect a historical victory for their teams.

The event also offers an unmissable Super Bowl halftime show with The Weeknd.

The Weeknd to Perform at Super Bowl LV Halftime Show

NFL, Pepsi, and NFL’s live music entertainment strategist partner Roc Nation announced in November 2020 that the After Hours singer will headline the 2021 Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show on February 7. With the current odds for Super Bowl being so great, fans could be in for an amazing game jam-packed with action.

Over the last decade, The Weeknd, whose birth name is Abel Tesfaye has gained notoriety in the music scene with his songs and stellar live performances. The Canadian singer’s unique delivery of R&B/Soul songs combined with his eccentric style has propelled him to stardom with billboard hits such as ‘Blinding Lights’ and ‘Heartless’.

All songs on The Weeknd’s most recent album, After Hours, charted on the Billboards top 100 list. With three Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, and two MTV Video Music Awards to his name, the Super Bowl LV halftime show could be the cherry on the cake after his music success in 2020.

At the VMAs in 2020, The Weeknd performed on top of New York City’s highest observation deck, Edge at Hudson Yards. The unforgettable performance started with The Weeknd waking up as a character portrayed on his Album, After Hours. After waking up from a crazy night in Las Vegas, the busted-nose character rose up slowly before performing under the stars while surrounded by strobe lights. The performance was topped off with computer-generated fireworks and helicopter shots, stunning millions of viewers around the world.

The halftime show is one of the most prestigious gigs in the music industry so it goes without saying how important it will be for The Weeknd to pull off a showstopper. While The Weeknd is no stranger to the pressure that comes with live performances, there is little doubt that he feels the weight of responsibility to put on a good show as the latest Super Bowl halftime performer in a long line of stars who have set the bar high for what is considered to be one of the greatest events in the world.

A year ago, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez were on the Super Bowl halftime lineup. They gave a critically acclaimed performance in front of over 104 million viewers. The show was a strong affirmation of cultural diversity with electric delivery of songs that celebrated the latin heritage and experiences of the stars in America.

Extra shots of euphoria got injected into the stadium as Shakira performed classics such as ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ and crowd surfed. Shortly after, Jennifer Lopez appeared in a black leather bodysuit. After arising from a skyscraper, she performed popular hits like ‘Jenny from the Block’ and ‘El Anillo’ before Shakira played the drums while Lopez’s daughter appeared on stage to sing ‘Let’s Get Loud’. The show has been compared to those of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Prince in previous years.

Other stars who have made it to super bowl halftime performers list include:

  • Maroon 5 with guests Travis Scott and Big Boi
  • Justin Timberlake
  • Coldplay with guests Beyoncé and Bruno Mars
  • Katy Perry with guests Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz
  • Bruno Mars with guests Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Beyoncé with guests Destiny's Child
  • Madonna with guests Cee Lo Green, LMFAO, M.I.A., and Nicki Minaj
  • The Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash
  • The Who

Super Bowl halftime performances were much smaller in the earlier years until Michael Jackson headlined at the 1993 show. After the king of pop’s jaw-dropping show, the league made more efforts to get similar artists to perform longer-than-normal shows. More efforts were also made to create performances using themes. The use of themes continued until 2002, after U2’s tribute to lives lost in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Although details have not been revealed about the Super Bowl halftime guests, a second star is expected to join The Weeknd on stage, making for an even more entertaining show. Many different popular names have been brought up as potential surprise acts. It could be a no-brainer to pair The Weeknd with his long-time friend and pop star, Drake, who happens to be dropping his album this month.

A lot of rock fans still have hope for an AC/DC appearance at this year’s Super Bowl. Reports were made of the band being linked to the halftime show due to the promotion of its new album by the NFL and the league’s partnerships with bands in recent years. Also, a petition was made by AC/DC fans in 2020 to convince the NFL to have the band play at the big game.

Social Distancing at the Super Bowl LV

A halftime show like no other is expected due in-part to The Weeknd’s reputation for great live performances but also because of the social distancing rules brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. More precautions will have to be taken to protect lives.

Fans usually fill up the field during the halftime performance, with many trying to get as close to the stage as they can. With the new social distancing rules, it is unlikely crowds will be gathered around the stage like in previous years.

The game will take place with limited capacity. At least 20% of Raymond James Stadium will be filled. Usually, it holds 66,000 fans but this time, in light of covid distancing measures, 13,000 fans will be able to enjoy the game and halftime show live. Thankfully, this won’t stop online super bowl betting which can be easily done from home.

To reduce the risks of COVID-19 spreading during the game, the NFL considered using a ‘bubble’ venue for the Super Bowl halftime show. The bubble would isolate players, coaches, and fans from the staff who would be needed to run the halftime show.

Dozens of support crew members, dancers, and musicians are usually needed for a successful show. A large number of choreographers, coordinators, and assistants is also needed. Production, for example, usually takes 2,000 to 3,000 people to pull off. Justin Timberlake's 2018 rendition of ‘Mirrors’ required an on-field crew to hold up mirrors to reflect stadium lights. Considering the logistics of the performances and the number of people helping, it could be in their best interest to have a bubble.

Sources suggest that an outdoor performance area was under consideration. This could mean that the bubble may be located near Raymond James Stadium rather than in the stadium itself. A move to a location free of rain may also be encouraged. Such a location could be in Arizona or Southern California while the game takes place in Tampa. A show of a small scale could also be an alternative solution, with significantly fewer amounts of people helping to run the show. Despite the scale, the show could end up being more intimate.

Location and Time

A list of Super Bowl bets is rolling in as the big day quickly approaches. The game will be aired on CBS and live-streamed on the CBS All Access app. The game may also be streamed through subscription services like YouTube Tv, Sling TV, and Hulu+. Kickoff for the Super Bowl is usually 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. This means that the Weeknd may begin performing at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Tampa was awarded the game after the NFL moved the Super Bowl set for Los Angeles from 2021 to 2022. This means that for the second year straight, the event will be played in the sunshine state. Super Bowl LV will be the fifth Super Bowl hosted by Tampa and the third played inside Raymond James Stadium.

The first Super Bowl was held in the Raymond James Stadium in January 2001 when the Baltimore Ravens beat the New York Giants by 34 - 7. The second Super Bowl hosted at the stadium was in February 2009 when the Pittsburg Stealers won their sixth title after beating the Arizona Cardinals by 27 - 23.

Raymond James Stadium

The teams aren’t the only ones preparing for the game. The city is making big steps to make sure it can shine as all eyes look to it. Organizers had considered giving fans a free ultimate NFL Super Bowl experience with a river walk lined with concerts, food, and drink in the days leading up to the big game.

The stadium has undergone a major renovation which could make for a more engaging fan experience. $160 million has been spent on renovations which have taken place over four years. From the cashless methods of payment to the touchless restroom features, the venue has been prepared to assist in reducing risks of COVID-19 spreading.

$50 million was spent on 5G technology that extends to all parking lots outside of the venue which could make it easier for fans to share golden moments about the game, including the halftime show. New video boards and LED lighting has also been installed for an enhanced experience.

Super Bowl Pregame Lineup

Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church will sing the national anthem at the game. Although they have never sung together before, fans are hoping for the two to do the nation proud with their collaboration.

R & B singer-songwriter Jazmine is a 12-time Grammy nominee who was able to get her name on the Billboard with popular songs like ‘Need U Bad’ and ‘Bust Your Windows’. Country star Church was recognized as Entertainer of the Year at the 2020 CMAs.

Sullivan and Church are part of a long line of prestigious performers of the Super Bowl National Anthem, including Demi Lovato, Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston Lady Gaga, Neil Diamond, Beyoncé, Diana Ross, Jennifer Hudson, Billy Joel, P!NK, Idina Menzel, Jordin Sparks Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, and Luke Bryan,.

The Grammy Award-winning artist, H.E.R., will join the pregame lineup to sing America the Beautiful. H.E.R., also known as Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, is a rising star having already won grammies for Best R & B Performance and Best R & B Album. She is the latest in a long line of distinguished America the Beautiful performers such as: Leslie Odom Jr, Yolanda James, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and Alicia Keys.

Making History

This year’s Super Bowl may have a few more historical moments than in previous years, from the gender of its official to the ethnicity of its producer. Sarah Thomas will make history as the first female referee to officiate a Super Bowl game, two years after becoming the first female referee at an NFL playoff game.

Thomas will work as a down judge. She will be part of a seven-person crew of officials who have been described as the best of the best. The crew of officials includes Fred Bryan, Rusty Baynes, James Coleman, Dino Paganelli, Carl Cheffers, and Mike Wimmer. The combined NFL officiating experience of the group is 88 years. The group also has 77 combined playoff game assignments, including previous Super Bowls.

Jesse Collins will also make history as the first black producer of the Super Bowl halftime show. Collins is the brains behind some of the most loved shows and events, from the Grammy Awards to BET Awards to CBS.

Super Bowl LV promises to meet the expectations of fans around the world with gripping moments as teams clash for supremacy at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The highly anticipated halftime show could be equally as exciting with one of the most talked-about musicians of 2020, The Weeknd, combining his falsetto voice with theatrics to deliver an unforgettable set of R & B/Soul songs for millions around the world. Much preparation has been done to ensure the day ends on a positive note. No doubt, there will be many special moments on February 7 after the game kickoff.
