The Next Grand Prix: Imola 2022

Imola, Italy. Formerly, the San Marino Grand Prix, and what F1 and the sponsors want us to call it the ''Formula 1 Rolex Gran Premio Del Made in Italy e Dell'Emilio–Romagna 2022''. We're not kidding and no, it's not fake. Imola is a track that I have always loved and it's also a favorite of many fans. The circuit is compromised of a 4.9km old-school track and has no run off areas. If the drivers make any errors, they will soon find themselves in the gravel trap or grass, with little possibility getting out. Imola was a track that was featured every year through to 2006. At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, we faced a very uncertain season with most races being cancelled due to restrictions. F1 introduced some new tracks, and familiar names were added to the back to the calendar with Imola being one of them.

I cannot recommend enough that you take a look at the onboard footage for 2020 and 2021. The racing in Imola can be hard, fast and close. The track however, has seen its dark days as well, with the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix being the most devastating weekend in the sports' history. Rubens Barichello crashed heavily at the chicane, travelling 225km/h (between turns 16 and 19). Barichello was unconscious as a result when he crashed but survived with a broken nose and didn’t race the following day. After a tremendous high speed impact on his first season in F1, Austrain Roland Ratzenburger was unfortunately killed in qualifying, to the shock of the drivers. Finally, and most regrettable of all, we lost Ayrton Senna at the restart of the race after he was involved in a huge impact on his first season with legendary team, Williams. Aytron, considered to be the greatest racer of all time was truly exceptional. A bronze statue memorial dedicated to Aytron is quietly hidden behind the barriers, only metres from the site of the impact. Every race, the drivers visit his memorial almost religiously as an act of respect and admiration. It's a chilling reminder of the dangers of motorsports, but also a reminder of how far we have come in terms spectator and driver safety.

Tifosi, welcome.

Charles Leclerc's dreamy start has been so inspiring for his Tifosi army. Ferrari fans around the world are excited for another weekend of Ferrari dominance. Imola will see some upgrades to the SF-75 by the team in red, but not in a major way considering their outstanding performance since day one of pre-season testing. It's absolutely amazing how they managed to get this new regulation formula just right the first time round since we were in Barcelona for pre-season testing, and with no updates since! According paddock gossip, they will bring in a new floor as well as an upgraded diffuser. This weekend though won't be a great weekend to try out new things on a car, as we'll once again be witnessing the new(ish) sprint format. I would stick to the "if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality, and just go with it if I were Mattia Binotto.

Sprint Format Explained

The F1 sprint is a 100km race without pit stops. Drivers will race straight to the chequered flag, just as they did last year. The season saw the top three drivers finish with extra points as a result which proved crucial last year. The top eight drivers who will finish the Sprint race will receive points this year. It's a nice mixture, but I doubt it will bother Leclerc too much at this stage. P1 will get eight points instead of three, with each subsequent position getting one less. These points will be applicable to both the constructors' and drivers' championships. It sounds fun and productive, right? The sprint weekend has produced some exciting racing, but it also bumps up the order for Sunday's race, the format which will be unchanged. So, what's the deal? This is how it will look for this weekend:

Friday Morning - Practice 1.

Friday Afternoon: Qualifying.

Wait, what? After just one practice session, we'll move into qualifying on Friday afternoon. The Sprint race will take place the next day, and the qualifying will determine the starting grid for the Sprint race. Qualifying format will remain unchanged.

Saturday Morning - Practice 2.

Saturday Afternoon Sprint Race.

A 100km race with no pit stops. Just racing. What are they racing for, exactly? The finishing order, as that will decide the grid positions for Sunday’s Grand Prix. This means that if Lewis Hamilton qualifies on pole on Friday, but finishes third in the sprint race, he will start Sunday's race from third on the grid.

Sunday - Race day.

The sprint race results will determine the starting positions of the drivers for the race.

It sounds like fun, right?! Probably. It is really necessary though? Perhaps not. Although I may be considered a traditionalist, I believe that Sunday's Grand Prix should still be decided by qualifying. Yes, there should be a Sprint race but it should be a separate championship or the starting positions for the sprint races should be determined by the drivers’ championship allocation. Anyway, rant over and moving on.

Betting Options

This Sprint format offers a few more betting options. Betfair in Europe has some excellent markets, which offer some betting opportunities for the Sprint race. It's counterpart in the USA, Fanduel doesn't appear to offer the same markets. The Scuderia is still the best bet, but don't discount RedBull as they will be trying to make up points for their poor start to the season. Mercedes is riding any wave of success that they can find. As they improve their car and continue to upgrade it, I believe they will eventually be fighting in the top three for the constructors’ championship. Sergio Perez is a fan of this track and it seems he loves it. There's some footage onboard of the Mexican going wheel-to-wheel with Alex Albon as well as with Esteban Ocon, at the last two races. His recent form and the fact that his contract doesn't cover next year means he doesn’t have a seat yet, it's clear that he has something to prove.

Other drivers in the mix

Technically, Imola is the home race for Alpha Tauri, the Italian outfit. Their factory is only a few kilometers from the track, so they use it for testing. Being RedBull's sister-team, it would be reasonable to expect them to receive some of Adrian Newey's aero goodies. Doesn't look like it though as they are struggling. Japan's Yuki Tsunoda and France's Pierre Gasly are great drivers and they are a team to keep an eye on. I'm sure they would love to achieve a great result at their home race. Although technically this circuit is also Alfa Romeo's home circuit, it is not what you would expect. Alfa is actually a Swiss racing team called Sauber. They've been racing since the 80's and they're currently rebranded as Alfa Romeo. The Italian brand is running Ferrari power and given this power unit's capability, the top Alfa bosses would love to see them succeed. Haas is another Ferrari-powered team. K-Mag, the Danish driver, is very present and active in his F1 return. We can expect Ferrari give their full support in terms mechanical and engine assistance. Ferrari's form alone would be enough to prove their dominance. However, if Ferrari can get their engine customer teams finishing in points, right behind them.. well wouldn't that make them look good?

Highlights of F1 Betting

  • Any prediction you come up with can make money betting on F1 races
  • Safer betting options to keep your betting account above water
  • In race betting with varying odds
  • Betting dominant favorites comes with low odds

Like many sports, including football, eSports betting in US, and more, Formula 1 betting is entertaining and enjoyable. With all the grand prix being held across the season, enough ample opportunities abound for punters to take advantage of and make cool cash while betting on profitable odds. Formula 1 Grand Prix sport events are usually separated by a span of one to three weeks throughout the course of the season. Let’s take a deep dive and explore the betting options available for punter in Formula 1 racing.

Betting F1 presents the punter with a variation of betting types that brings the ultimate in betting flexibility. These bets allow the punter to wager on a lot more than who is going to win the race or who’s going to finish last. Just like betting odds Daytona 500, nearly any prediction you come up with will be something that you can wager on to make money betting on F1 races. Let’s take a look at the most popular bet types available.

Race Winner Bets

The most popular type of bet that most people are already aware of is the “race winner bets” or “to-win” bet. This is a bet where you bet on a particular driver to win the race. The punter picks the driver that he or she thinks is going to win, then place a to-win bet, and if that driver finishes the race in first place, the bet is won.

This type of bets offers huge odds and can offer the punter a big win. This means that if you bet $20 and win, you will receive a lot more than $20 in profit on that bet., because there are a lot of drivers in races who often have little shot at winning. As opposed to some other racing organizations, F1 has seen several seasons where one or two drivers seem to dominate every race all season long, for example in 2016, Louis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg dominated the races for the season which can make for lower payout odds for the dominating  drivers, but incredible payout odds on everyone else. New odds are being offered even as the game progresses.

Podium Finish Bets

The podium finish betting option is safer as it offers a market in which drivers that take the podium position are offered coverage after a race. In what sense? The podium finish driver of choice could finish either in first, second, or third place, but even these positions do not even matter at the end of the day. As long as bettors chooses a driver who seems to be doing better and he finishes on the podium, there is a win, and of course, this win is not concerned with whether the driver finishes first, second or third. Even better, the profit made does not differ from position to position, as long as your driver finishes in top three.

It should be noted that the odds on the podium finish bets are lower than those of the race winner. This is not surprising because choosing a driver who would finish in first position is more difficult than choosing a driver to finish in the top three positions. This does not ruin anything since the odds on the drivers will likely still be higher than even money. If you want play safe and reduce your risks, the podium finish bet is for you, especially if a driver has potential of winning.

Driver Matchups Bets

Driver matchup bets are wagers where you choose between two drivers who you think will finish higher in a race. . As long as the driver you choose finishes before the second one chosen in the matchup, the bet is yours, irrespective of other aspects of the race.  The position of other driver is inconsequential likewise the position of the two drivers. The important thing is that the driver that you picked beats the other driver. This bet comes in handy if you have a prediction about a driver who most likely would not win the race. For example

A punter places a bet on driver A in a matchup bet between driver A and Driver B: if after the race, driver B comes before or finishes before driver A, the punter loses the bet. The bet is only won if driver A finishes before driver B irrespective of the position driver A finishes at.

A punter could actually place this bet on a single race or on overall standings after a championship or Grand Prix such that the outcome will be decided by whichever driver finishes higher in the official Formula One standings at the end of the season

Proposition Bets

Proposition bets are wagers where something is proposed to either happen or not happen. It requires a prediction with skill most times, and sometimes they require a guess. The best prop bet odds are usually found in advance, so make sure you look at odds for sports events this weekend at the beginning of the week. If you’re only looking for the excitement and thrill, you can bet any F1 props you want, and you’re sure to have a great time. If you’re worried about blowing your betting account and are looking to make money, you should stick to prop bets that require skill to predict properly.

A skilled proposition bet might be a bet on whether a particular driver will lead in most of the laps in a race. This bet clearly requires skill to predict. A well-thought-out prediction will have a much better chance of winning than blindly picking any driver to lead the most laps or lead the points table just for the fun of it. You can even place online cricket bets today using this betting type. It really challenges your knowledge of the sports you are betting on, but the payoff is generally very lucrative.

Pole Position

Pole Position refers to that position at the starting grid. In a race event, the pole position will fall somewhere at the front row when the race is about to begin. Usually, this position is taken by the driver who has the highest qualifying time in the pre-race trials, such drivers are called pole sitters.

A popular market, here you wager the driver that obtains the pole position during the qualifying portion of the Grand Prix. This is another bet that falls under the simple category. Pick a driver and make a pole position bet. If your driver has the best qualifying time and earns the pole position, you win. It’s as simple as that. If your pole sitter pick for example Louis Hamilton has the best qualifying time, you win the bet. As with all of the other F1 bets where you’re selecting an individual driver to do something, the payout odds will reflect the ability of each driver.

Futures Bets

A popular F1 bet to make is a futures bet. Futures bets as the word future entails are bets on who or what team will be the Champion at the end of the season. In Formula 1, the punter can bet which team he or she thinks will win the Constructor’s Championship , Driver’s Championship or even both. At the beginning of the season you might want to make this bet as the odds are amazing at this time. This means that if someone starts off the season hot, the payout odds you can get are most likely going to be worse than what you could have gotten before the season started. On the flip side, if a driver starts out colder than expected, you may be able to get better payout odds on them winning the Championship if you still think they’re going to turn it around.

This bet will of course pay out much higher when it is placed before the season actually begins, and the odds get worse and worse as the season goes on.

Fastest Lap Bets

To bet on the fastest lap, punters must select which driver will complete the quickest lap during the race. It can be set at any time during the race. A tip is to look at which drivers have the fastest cars and past records with pole starting positions.

Will A Safety Car Appear?

This is a “Yes” or “No” bet. It is a wager on the appearance of a safety car during the Grand Prix. For this, a punter is given only a yes or no option to select from.
