NFL betting is becoming increasingly popular even outside of the United States. With even more regular season games planned to be held in the UK after a minimum of three overseas games has been played on UK home ground. Whilst games in UK only make up a fraction of the regular season fixtures, football fans can still watch the NFL all year round, so with more and more fans watching, the NFL sports betting frenzy also is increasing astronomically and learning the strategies to cash in the odds as a punter is essential.
By now, you will understand that there are plenty of online sportsbooks out there who will each give you a way of betting on the NFL. So how do you decide which of these sportsbooks to sign up to? Here are the five key things we look for before recommending any NFL betting site to you:
You will want to make sure that the sportsbook is actually legally allowed to operate in the state that you are playing from. Plus its betting platform should feature the latest encryption technologies and you should be able to make your deposits and withdrawals with trusted payment providers.
You should get fair and competitive odds for every game in the NFL. Not only that but the sportsbook should also give you enhanced odds deals for the biggest games like the Super Bowl and so on.
Each sportsbook should give you literally hundreds of ways to bet on each NFL game. These betting lines should include the money line, spread, totals, props, player props and of course all of those live betting options.
You should be able to access a broad range of promo offers as a new and existing customer at the sportsbook. These deals should be usable for NFL betting and always have clear and fair terms and conditions.
Every online sportsbook should be easy to use from any modern smartphone, table or computer. Not only will they they let you bet on football from your web browser, but you should also be able to do so via downloadable apps for iOS and Android devices.

There are three basic betting types in NFL betting and they are as follows:
An example of a moneyline bet
The Money Line is essentially betting on who will win the game. A moneyline wager is one that is placed on either the favorite or the underdog to win straight up. All that matters is who wins and this applies for everything from NBA betting to the NFL and beyond. Look at the example below.
Cleveland Browns@ 3.45 and the New York Giants@ 1.36. As we can see, the Giants are clear favorites in this game at odds of 1.36 while the Browns are at odds of 3.45.
The punter is simply betting on who he or she thinks will win the game. If the punter believes there is value with New York Giants, he or she bets on them to win the game at odds of 1.36. On the other hand, if he or she believes there is value with Cleveland Browns, he or she bet on them to win the game at odds of 3.45.
An example of spread betting odds
Sports bookies offer a point handicap or point spread where the negative sign (–) or positive (+) sign attached to the number shows which team is the favorite or underdog. Let’s look at an example to illustrate this
Consider a game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Rams. The point spread for this game is as given by the sportsbook:
Dallas Cowboys @ + 6.5 -110
Los Angeles Rams @ -6.5 -110
The -110 means for every $110 the punter wagers, he or she wins $100 of successful bets. Wagering on Los Angeles Rams at -6.5, translates that for successful wager, Los Angeles Rams must win the game by seven points or more. If you put your money on Dallas Cowboys at +6.5, this translates that the Dallas Cowboys can lose the game by an allowable margin of 5 points, if it becomes 6 or more; you forfeit your wager.
An example of totals betting odds
The concept of betting on totals, or Over/Under (O/U), is quite simplistic. The bettor wagers on whether the TOTAL points scored in a game will fall over or under a pre-determined number set by the sportsbook. The example below shows a game and the opening NFL betting odds for under-over.
The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants @ over under 55.5, 1.91
A wager on Over 55.5 points means both teams score must sum up to at least 56 points for your wager to be successful. Conversely , if you wager on Under 55.5 points, both teams must score at most 55 points for their wager to be successful
Bet type | How it works |
---|---|
Live betting | In-game betting or live betting as sometimes referred to affords punters to place wagers as the action unfolds. |
Halves and quarters | Many times betting opportunities are presented in halftime, in which you can wager on the outcome of the next half or next quarter. |
Prop bets | These are bets that are unrelated to the overall game result. Read our guide to prop bet types to see some great examples of how these work. |
Futures betting | Futures bets are bets placed on future events such as who will be the Super Bowl champion. |
