Australia have beaten England by 9-0 wickets to give them a 1-0 lead in the five-match Ashes Test series.

Saturday afternoon at the Gabba in Brisbane secured what overall was a fair comfortable first test for Australia.

A poor day one from England, and a storming start for Australia, left the tourists needing to get through 98 overs of play on day two. Despite looking much better on the second day, England still only managed 84.

Australia’s 10th triumph in 11 vs England

Saturday’s defeat in Brisbane now means that Australia have beaten England in 10 of their last 11 home Ashes Test matches.

The England team were very much hyped up by their own media ahead of the Ashes the Ashes this year, but have failed to live up to the billing.

It’s been a dream start for Australia, especially given the fact that preparations for sports fiercest rivalry were marred by the shock resignation of captain Tim Paine following the leaking of an explicit text message exchange with a female Cricket Tasmania colleague back in 2017.

Paine later ruled himself out of even playing for Australia in the Ashes Tests, resulting in strong speculation that he may now retire from the game for good at the age of 37. However, the Cricket Australia chief has backed Paine to make a Test cricket return for Australia.

First win for Captain Cummins

Paine was quickly replaced by 28-year-old Pat Cummins, who is now Australia’s first Test cricket team captain in 65 years.

Cummins didn’t have to wait long for his first victory as captain of his national team, as his team sailed to victory in the first test of the biggest international sporting rivalry.

Speaking in a press conference after his team’s nine-wicket victory over the English, Cummins said he felt ‘the captaincy got better as the game went on’. He then went on to say that he learned more on day three of the Test match, which was the only day when England were the team more in control.

Things go from bad to worse for England

As if the taste of defeat in the first of five Ashes Test matches wasn’t enough for England, they have been handed a series of fines as well.

The England Test Cricket team have received a fine of 100% of their match fees five World Test Championship points due to their slow over-rates during the Test match at the Gabba. Under the rules, teams must receive a one-point penalty every time they fall short of a target for each over.

Australia haven’t got off scot-free from fines themselves though, as number five batter Travis Head was fined 15% of his match fee for the use of obscene language on the field of play.
